Will it be your first tattoo? Which part of your body?

My opinion is why would anyone get a tattoo of something significant to whole races/tribes of people but has no personal significance to you? But that's just me. I find it silly, for instance, when non-asians get tattoos of japanese characters.

I suppose if you just want something for its looks, it doesn't matter. But as far as i'm concerned, a tattoo stays with you for your whole life, so it should have some deeper significance other than it just looks cool.

But if it works for you, go ahead. Just maybe think about if you'll still like it in another 20 - 30 years.

Second, but first big one. Starts on left arm, wraps around the back and into the torso along the left side... Sharp angles and long sections.

Hmmm, I love Tribal tats I see on others. I think it'll look good on me. I hope to always be inshape, cuz tribal on over weight or even those with a little "extra" looks terrible in my mind. I won't get it if it looks bad when she draws it on me.

    Anyone else? Comments?

Well, I agree with you that tribal tats are attractive but not terribly original. Personally, I wouldn't get one because they're so universally common. Of course, the AUM symbol on my own arm is not hugely original or uncommon, either, so who am I to talk?

I think men with tattoos are sexy. That said, IMHO, a TRIBAL tattoo will date you. It is 'trendy.' You will forever look like a 2000-era porn star. In 2025.

If you are going 'big,' why not work with an artist who can sketch out something unique/timeless and meaningful for you? And while doing so, plan out future additions as well. Go for continuity. It is body ART. Not body refrigerator magnets.

I believe the only people who have tribal tats are ones with connections to a specific tribal community. For instance, I will be receiving a Maori family design in the next year as my best friend is marrying a Maori princess. Her family sees me as being my best friend's mentor in our world and will also become part of the family. I'm really not looking forward to getting tatted with a sharp whalebone. I think the design for myself is from mid-chest, wrapping around the left arm to mid-back. My friend's design is full chest and back with family markings on the face.

I think it's best to get a tattoo that has a mix of aesthetic appeal and significance of some kind for you (tied to an event, milestone, belief, etc.). But even then, there's no guarantee you won't have mixed feelings about it down the road.

I sometimes regret my choice of design, and when I first got it, I liked both the look of it and what it signified. You can't always predict how you will change. I'd get something a little different if I could do it again.

Do what you want....f everyone else. If you like it...do it!

But if you have a tribal armband, I will punch my friends arm in a "tribal armband" game a la "punch buggy" or "slug bug."

Stop right there and rethink the tattoo. Yes, you're skinny and in shape now, but will you be skinny and in shape at 50? Nature has a way of leaving your hopes out of the equation, so if you don't like the way it looks on "extra", assume you will have extra eventually.

I also agree with the guys who say get something with meaning for you or you will, down the road, look like an out-of-date porn star (love that). Generic tribals are nice now, but what about in 60 years when you're rolling around the rest home in your robe? It'll look like you got piss drunk and stumbled into a tattoo parlor and picked out the first thing you saw on the wall...and then slurred "I want it BIG!" Tattoos are forever, so make it matter.

I don't know, I don't think Tribal will go out of style....They are just so damn attractive, but you could say that about ankle warmers and stone washed jeans....look what happened there!icon_eek.gif

I hope to stay fit for the rest of mylife. I damn well will work on it!

but it depends on the tattoo - the Guy wearing it - and where on the body it's put

We kinda need Feng Shuei for tattoos icon_confused.gif

When I see a guy with a tribal tattoo, I think "Wow, he could have gotten 'Mom...In a HEART...'

It's so unoriginal and cheesy. I mean if you are going to get semi permanent ink placed in your skin why not get something cool and significant. Noone will come up to you and say "Hey sick tribal band..."

    Food for thought:

    1. 1997 (when tribal tatts were cool) was like 11 years ago.
    2. You are not a straight frat boy on spring break in Cancun/Negril.
    3. You can do so much better and can get something beautiful with some actual MEANING to you behind it.

    That is all.

All of this coming from the guy with no tatts. LOL.
