“I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line ‘I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and gay is better.’ And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me. A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it’s a choice, then we could opt out. I say it doesn’t matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not. … Why can’t it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we’re just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don’t think that they should define the terms of the debate. I also feel like people think I was walking around in a cloud and didn’t realize I was gay, which I find really offensive.” Cynthia Nixon

This, "I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me."

I guess she chose to be straight as well.

    Bi for now! *waves*

Well there is not significantly strong evidence in any direction. The biological and genetic evidence is weak and hard to reproduce.

She is right on one point, by absolutely declaring that it is not a choice is just as bad as assuming we can find it with our current level of neurobiological and genetic knowledge (we can't).

I think she should make the distinction that women have a much more fluid sexuality. They are able to move between roles with relative ease and little social consequence. Men do not have this luxury.

i think you should realize she said this in january, and issued a retraction about how she didn't express herself correctly

    ^This.

She stated that she's in fact bisexual, always has been. She just doesn't like the terminology because bisexuals are largely ignored.

Though I'm not aware of the retraction, I can say this:

She doesn't get to define 'gay' for me.

If she's bi, then she doesn't represent gay. If she doesn't like the terminology; well then, that's too bad. She doesn't get to redifine it for her personal benefit. She can't glom onto the gays and then claim later "I'm straight right now."

lol, so instead she fuelled the you-can-choose-to-be-straight fanaticism of the religious right by claiming she chose to be gay.

    *facepalm*

    Oh well......
    Straight for now...er....gay for now...er....

I will get hate mail for this, but I'm going to say it anyway...

    What do I think?

Pseudo-celebrity looking for a cause to take up - came out of the closet as a publicity stunt to garner attention because how many roles was she being offered as SITC was winding down? Now starting to back-track a bit... give it a year or two and she will be married to a man...

Remember Anne Heche????? "It's just a phase"

Haven't you taken a look at Cynthia Nixon? She has home depot power tools written all over her face. I could spot that lesbo before she came out the closet. And it's been years. She's not going back.
