Lat Injury - One Month Later

A little over a month ago I was out playing some tennis with a friend. I had just started playing tennis again a few weeks prior to this day after recovering from a wrist injury, and I was excited to start playing at a higher level again.

After about an hour of intense hitting and things going well, I hit a forehand and immediately felt a very sharp pain starting from my thumb, up the side of my arm, and ending right under my shoulder blade. I shook it off and went to pick my racket back up and it was very difficult. My fingers felt very weak and the pain up my arm was very sharp. I called it a day and went home not worrying about the injury too much since I've had numerous injuries over the past few years.

Like I said earlier, it has been about 5 or 6 weeks since this incident and I'm still experiencing pain. The pain definitely isn't as widespread as the first day or two, but that doesn't help me very much. The source of the pain is right below my right shoulder blade, and I'm still experiencing soreness up the inside of my arm. It's also a little difficult to move my thumb around.

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced a muscle pull in this area with similar symptoms and if so how long did it take to recover? I was just getting into a great workout routine when this happened and I'm definitely missing being at the gym and playing tennis. Thanks.

Time to head to a physician. Sounds like more than a simple "lat" injury if your thumb is affected.

From the pain referral you're describing, It sounds more like teres minor. I'd probably go get checked out to make sure you didn't mess up your rotator cuff.

Trying to get to the doctor sometime this week. I'll give you an update if I do.
