    Hey.Hi.Hello,

Earlier this week there was a hate crime committed at my university. Two women were targeted in the dorms for their sexual orientation. Notes were put on and under their door. A few of which telling them to "die". There are a bunch of news articles on it:

    http://articles.courant.com/2012-03-13/news/hc-ccsu-hate-crime-rally-0314-20120313_1_ccsu-police-crimes-rally-participants

    Cause:
I work in the mail room on campus, and I see everyone that lives there. I came across one of the girls who was subjected to the hate. She was a mess to put it bluntly. I was with her a good thirty minutes just talking to her and letting her vent. I normally keep to myself and roll with the punches. If someone was to really mess with me. I would make it known I wasn't going to tolerate it with a stare or a few words, but to come across someone what couldn't stand up for themselves pulled on my heart strings.

    Effect:
After that I went to the LGBT and signed up to be an Advocate for the gay community at my school. I'll help with small stuff first... getting projects/groups together, Speaking about my transition and experiences to class rooms... List goes on.

To the point of this thread...

I have only been out for 2 years. I can proudly say I am more confident, happy, and open for taking those steps. However, I feel that I am inexperienced. The LGBT group will help in some cases, and I have started my research but I feel I need more.

I figured I would give RJ a shot. Any others on here advocates? Any Tips, Tricks, Hints on some related stuff would be great.

Do NOT back down or away. Be bold, be strong, be defiant at times, be smart and be confident.

Otherwise your efforts will be for nothing.

On a place to start, is to have you and your organization demand of the administration that this subject of required respect for all students, and the university's serious commitment to expel students who engage in innapropriate harrassment be covered in new student orientation, and letters of acceptance to newly admitted students.

That's great. There have a been a series of similar incidents at the nearby university in the past few months, and the campus community rallied around the LGBT's very admirably. I am friends with the chaplain there who also is a mentor to the LGBT students.
