I've noticed this happening far too often. Getting an email from someone who JUST joined the site, and they are like 18 (so they say) and usually from some not-too-common overseas country. Today I got one from an 18-year-old in China who joined three days ago.

    "wow...hot man."

I have serious doubts that these are legitimate.

I thought the requirement was to be at least 18 or older on this site?

They "say" they are 18, but there are red flags: they look 15 or have no pictures, from uncommon overseas countries, immediately send out short two to three word emails, and hot list and buddy guys left and right.

    Smells like underage trolls.

Oh okay I get what you're saying. I don't think there's anyway to enforce the 18+ rule on this site to be honest. Especially those that don't even have a picture. That's the anonymity factor for ya online

Actually there is, but few of us would like it. That's what's contained in some of these Internet proposals from [you can guess which] US politicians to make the web safe for children. All adult sites would be required to keep a legal verification of age of all subscribers to the site. It's sorta like the notice you see in porn videos that a certification has been filed that all the actors are 18 years of age or older.

Naturally such an impossible requirement would kill almost all US adult (and gay) sites, the ultimate intended purpose of such schemes. It's not clear what happens if web owners moved their operations offshore, if the US Govt would throw up firewalls against them, effectively making us no better than oppressive regimes that we now criticize for doing the same thing.

At present most US adult sites rely on an honor system by their users. And as noted here, that's the easiest thing to circumvent. I'm not sure if making the RJ verification system mandatory would do much more than weed out bots and multiple (sock) account holders.

Why don't I ever get any hot 18 year olds from developing countries hitting on me?

I dunno, but it's no proud distinction. When they even hit on me, the same day they join or soon after, I know they're up to no good. Laying on the flattery, and saying they want to have sex with me, is too obviously phony.

But maybe they get some takers (who are about to BE taken), just like the old trolls who go to a nearby gay strip club here, to slip money into the boys' Speedos and in turn be told how attractive they are. I don't understand it myself, but if men can be fleeced in person with that ego-stroking crap, maybe these overseas hustlers can do it online, too.

Honestly, I don't see a problem with younger guys joining who'd want to talk because they have no one else to talk to about being gay. When I was 15/16 I joined some +18 gay websites to try and talk to some guys because I felt alone. Of course, places I joined were used for sex mainly and conversation after so I still felt alone. I wish I knew about RJ 6 years ago.

So I don't see the problem with teens coming on here the problem would be the private messages. I've worked on forums before as moderator and a solution I've seen work a lot is the requirement of a certain post count in order to make threads and send PMs. I guess that could resolve the problems here, maybe need 100 posts to send PMs and make threads. By then, someone can tell if this person is just trolling or not.

PS: I'm from a barely developing country, would you guys like me to hit on you?

You're right, I don't think a lot of the people who claim to be 18 really are 18....I think a lot of them are like 15 or 14 and they just go to the closest legal age possible when signing up. That's why alarms sound off in my head when someone 18 or even 19 messages me.

Wow, so you were a minor and lied about your age to talk with adults? Holy crap. That's called jail baiting. Unbelievable that you would do that. If a conversation even turned a hint toward anything sexual. You could have had the site shut down. That's why RJ has to be careful.

The solution is to charge a fee as you have to be a legal age to have a credit card. That would stop most, except for the one's who steal their parent's cards. Even if RJ had a fee of $1 a year that would cut out most of these scammers. Scammers tend not to want to pay.

Another option is a block feature from having anyone under a certain age contacting you. The other poster was correct in that you can tell that most of these scammers choose the youngest legal age possible that a site has, in this case 18. So if you set it at 25, you can surely tell by then if someone is really 25 or some 15-yo.

Agree. And if they steal Daddy's credit/debit card, they run the risk of him seeing a charge he doesn't recognize.

You may recall RJ once had both free and paid premium memberships, before switching over to entirely free. Not sure why, I guessed maybe too much hassle (did Chris actually ship my RJ T-shirt to me with his own hands?), and perhaps more money from the site host, since free meant we lost the option to block advertisements. But I don't know the economics of social sites, and maybe free caused the membership numbers to rise significantly.

In any case, if the economics would favor it, I'd endorse a paid subscription, as a way to filter out the underage.

Well I didn't want anything sexual, I was looking for someone to talk to so I just looked for people like 18/19. I would hate if RJ charged a fee because I don't have a credit card and don't intend to get one. I think that having the post count requirement would work best, and through their posts you can tell if they're a troll.

On a side note, I didn't even know if RJ has staff/moderators on the forum... someone happened to say it was running on its own and I thought here could have been shutting down... just when I joined...

Yeah but the moderators (if any) can tell if the posts are of quality or at least from someone who actually put thought in them rather than consistent one word replies and hence showing if they're a troll or not to begin with.

I think I've had a few of these e-mails. I don't know what could reasonably be done about them. There is no way to verify someone's age on a world-wide site. Even something like having an identification card or credit card wouldn't work in all countries. I just ignore them.

Hmm that does sound a bit complex just to get youngsters off the site. Maybe we should just have all members be verified and holding up their photo ID as well so we can see the birthdate LOL! (and all the other information blacked out).
