Taking theatre and tap right now. Have to take ballet at some point since it makes you better at every other form of dance. Don't really want to. More so because I find it kinda boring, and I don't want to wear tights/ballet slippers. Not very comfortable to me. I'm self-conscious.

There's this underlying tone in your post that ballet dancers somehow aren't jocks or aren't athletic.

    male-dancer.jpg?w=500&h=379

And that certainly isn't true. It's about taking care of yourself and your body and finding something that brings you joy, whether it be football, baseball, swimming, or ballet.

Can we just cut to the chase and get to the fem / masc flame war?

There are many dancers on RJ btw - take a look at 7Famark for a primo example of athletic build.

I think ballet is a beautiful art but I dont care for it, but I love contemporary and lyrical. They just show more expression to me than Ballet. Its so technical that I feel lost,

and hip hop gets me crunk,
I like jive to it makes me happy...sorry ..I love me some SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

I did hip hop dances and cotnest and even won one when I was younger, but im a street dancer..and that isnt real dancing until you are trained.

Dancers are typically great in bed.

    Just sayin.

Edit: Back on topic I should add that I have zero dancing ability, so trying ballet would be akin to a dwarf attempting an NBA career. I believe it'd be fantastic to have that sort of control over and power within your body. A very visceral experience.

Have to admit that I don't understand it. Have been to a couple of classical dance performances, years apart. Have worked right on stage with a ballet troupe. But I still do not have enough experience of it to know much at all.

The discipline and conditioning are impressive. No team/field athlete should lack respect for serious dancers.

Full of WIN* and sex appeal. Yes I totally respect all male dancers. I'm sure they play other sports too, but uncertain about categorizing them as jocks, unless I find that a lot of them do so already themselves, then I'll just cave and drool. icon_twisted.gif

Here's the thing, and hopefully this post can serve to keep this thread from turning into the war over masculinity that it is inevitably bound to turn into...

Taking ballet, or any other form of dance, does not make someone any more or any less of a "jock".

That being said, and as a dancer myself - I would NOT consider dance to be an activity that would make someone a "jock". It is a form of art....one that does require a massive amount of physical training and conditioning...but at the end of the day, it is not a sport, which is what we typically associate with the term jock.

And as far as the debate over masculinity or femininity goes....I've been taking ballet classes for fifteen years now, and I have encountered guys that are as masculine as you can imagine...and I've also enountered guys that are as feminine as you can imagine....there is no rule of thumb when it comes to dance, and it's unfair to classify it as a "girly" or "feminine" activity.

I spend a considerable amount of time in the gym, and also have been playing tennis and hockey since I was very little...which is why I would classify myself as a "jock"...but absent those things, and being *just* a dancer...I don't know that I would.

I completely agree with 7Famark. I classify dance as an "athletic activity" as opposed to a sport ... because as he said, it's an art and not a competition. The "jock" aspect of my username comes from the other sports activities I participate in, not the dance.

    I wish I would have.

Dancers are completely hot! I love guys who are unafraid to express themselves creatively... plus dancers have great bodies.

I don't think anyone thinks you have to be fem to be in ballet (at least I hope not). And for those who say they don't like ballet, I would bet you just haven't seen the right ballet. It's like going to see one movie and judging all movies based on the quality of that one film.

I have nothing but respect and admiration for male ballet dancers (ballet dancers in general). I wouldn't mind trying it out one day, I might like it or I might learn that it's not for me... either way I find it interesting.
