My reaction was: very impressive, but I would never have the time nor willpower to do such a feat.

I have played some geeky games before, including one that Yahtzee (from Zero Punctuation) nicknamed "Spreadsheets in Space", but I could never get into Minecraft. That you could actually build something this elaborate is quite the feat.

Though dated and poorly designed, it's a highly addictive open-world video game that's available on PC, Android and iOS. It will be available on XBL and PSN by year's end.

And to compare it to LEGOS is an insult to LEGOS.

Excuse me. LEGOS happen to consist of 90% of my childhood. You have to admit, though, that it's the quickest and easiest way to explain it to someone who's never heard of it.

When I was young, I spent a lot of my recreational time with LEGOS, too.

I agree that it's the easiest way to describe Minecraft, but there's no digital pastime that comes close to the physical interaction and creativity inspired by building blocks like LEGOS. People, especially Americans, are not growing smarter. This "digital revolution" that's being fed to us is dumbing us down and making us more antisocial.

99% of those capable of recreating digital versions of a graphing calculator or Taj Mahal are incapable of designing or building these type of things in the real world. I say we give our children the real thing - LEGOS or any other building blocks - which forces them to create with limited resources. We'd be better for it.

People spend time doing this? Reminds me of Second Life and all that weird "you should be sleeping" stuff. But then my idea of a video game is PacMan. Fuck I'm old.

But I think the emphasis in this case should be put on that the calculator actually works. So if he was given the same amount of (unbreakable) legos (or better yet, a construction team and material to make it all human sizes, so you could step on the numbers on the pad), the machine would in fact work. The first mechanical calculator was built in 1642, and the Babbage machine is fairly known. I'm assuming the guy knew what he was doing :-)
