Massive numbers of protesters blocked up the roads in Montreal today as students protested a planned raise in university tuition by the government of Québec.

Proponents of the raise counter by comparing the tuition to that of Anglo Canada, which is higher, and thus say the raise should be allowed. But the opposition protests that Quebec should not be compared to their Anglo counterparts. When allowing a comparison to their European counterparts, where university study is practically free, it can be argued that a raise in tuition is not necessary.

Much outrage is seen in Quebec, outbreaks of violence with police "brutalité" have been reported in the days leading up to this protest. There is some concern that this situation may deteriorate as the Quebec government is said to be "feeding the fire"

Montreal police are F-CKED! I've already had to walk through tear gas on campus this year while walking home from class not to mention all the kids they pepper sprayed, also ON CAMPUS!
And since I already work myself to the bone to try to pay for my tuition it was pretty sweet being in such a huge throng of people on your side.

It was insane! But useless, it aint gonna change anything. The fees aren't going down. Students must pay that's it. And LOL they're complaining while they pay 3000$ per year come on! Look at America and look and every other state besides Quebec. They should consider themselves lucky!

There are English speaking universities in Montreal and it's still 3000$ per year. I'm just pissed that I'm paying money to classes that I cannot attend because of their stupid strike.

Ehm, once again, says the French person!!! You've gotta know how much class and work we have to miss in PAris for all the protests being held there? Or did you perhaps escape to the new world to avoid this exercise of freedom lol? icon_razz.gif

Well, then how about you get the fuck out of Quebec and go enjoy your free classes in France ?

It amazes me how people that are complaining about this strike always talk at the first person : "I'm pissed, because I'm paying and I can't go to class, blablabla...", while the ones that are defending their society, their right to knowledge as well as the future generations, well they call themselves "Us".

Probably not, though the rest of Canada and the US are certainly not something we wanna take as an example at all.

Not to mention, we might pay less in tuition fees, but we pay a lot more in taxes through our lives compared to any other Canadian. When you're gonna throw numbers, throw them all.

    a) Haha, be real.

    b) I work, and most of my colleagues do.

    c) Of course he is. When HE was studying, it would only take him 4 weeks of work to pay his semester. We need 8 weeks of work to pay ours. And they're telling us to pay "notre juste part". I'd be laughing my ass off as well.

What I find shocking is that parents do not participate in paying for at LEAST a third or even half of the fees. We're talkin about 1500$ per year. A parent should think about their child's future and save up a bit. That ain't a lot of money sorry

It depends. Some parents do, and some parents just can't afford it. They pay taxes too, and they pay a lot more than any other Canadian parents...

The problem is especially heavy for the middle-class parents. My family is from the middle class, they really had to make sacrifices to pay my studies, and they were forced to do so because since they're from the middle class, I would get no financial help from the government.

As a future parent, expecting I would have 2 kids in university at about the same time, I can't see myself paying almost 10 000$ a year only for their fees while I'm also paying a shitload of taxes (between 20 and 24% of my annual income) and trying to survive through this... And I will probably have a decent job, by then. I'm not only thinking about myself, I'm thinking about the future generations.

I feel lucky that my parents were helpful enough, but that I was walking for my friends and co-students that I saw struggling with their jobs, their family, their stress and their studies through the years of my degrees... I was walking with them, for us.

    That's life ?

Yeah, that's what they told the women when they were fighting for their right to vote.
That's what they told the slaves when they wanted freedom.
That's what they're telling the Gays right now while they wanna get married.

And like all of them, Quebec students refused to take it as an answer.

And the last thing I did today was hurt myself. Today, I had a beautiful time with friends, with my community, with the people with whom I'll build and maintain this society in the coming years. Today, I marked history with them, and it will always be in my memory.

Don't use extreme examples. You're confusing ethnical rights with paying more money for university.
The systems needs money, that's it. End of story. Either they're gonna take it this way or theyre going to get the money another way but either way you're going to pay and you should unless you want your "country" to be bankrupt.

I'm not for the rise of the fees, NO ONE takes pleasure in paying more money but sometimes you just have to and there's no point arguing Because you will lose. Good night

    $3000 a year?

    ....

Not saying the protests aren't justified, but given that $3000 is 1% of my total student loan amount (in America) it just kind of boggles my mind that tuition is so ridiculously high here.
