southbeach1500 saidOf course the Federal government has the power to force all citizens to purchase anything it says that we must purchase.

Health insurance, guns, cars from General Motors, 2 pounds of carrots per week (for our health of course which is for the "General Welfare" and will cut down on medical costs)...

You seem to forget that the law does not say "you must purchase this plan from this entity". It simply says you must be ensured and creates a number of new options for those who can't afford private prices.

This is a tough call, after the activist Republican justices ignored the laws and appointed George W. Bush president, then ASKED that "Citizens United" be brought before the court so that they could legislate from the bench.

    So, nothing would surprise me.

If you have not entered into a contract with a private insurance company, you will be punished by the Federal government.

    In the future:

If you can not provide proof that you have purchased a gun, you will be punished by the Federal government.

If you can not provide proof that you have purchased a GM car, you will be punished by the Federal government.

If you can not provide proof that you have purchased 2 pounds of carrots per week, you will be punished by the Federal government.

No. You will pay a tax penalty as the rest of the tax payers will be responsible for your care when you need medical treatment.

This is a Republican plan, mandate and all. I'm for single payer, but let's have a minimum of lies, please...

The United States Constitution does not force someone to do something they were not already doing.

If the "commerce clause " is cited. Then many INACTIVITIES could effect commerce. One could enact a law mandating everyone buy low fat meals because buying junk food would adversely effect commerce.

The Constitution limits the federal government , since healthcare mandates are not an enumerated power Obama should have started with a Constitutional amendment.

We are just going to have to wait for the Supreme Court, so stay tuned.

    A penalty is a punishment.

That's a stretch. There is plenty of precedent for tax penalties to induce behavior that results in a public good. People are not being whipped with a cat o' nine tails. They are being taxed for their irresponsibility.
