Personally, i think its a lot better than Hard Candy, but definitely following Confessions! It has some good songs ( Im Addicted, I Dont Give A, Masterpiece, Beautiful Killer) but it has some WAY low points (Gang Bang, Superstar, I Fucked Up). I think she's still got it for her age, but she needs to stop trying to achieve this young vibe and go with something that suits her best (AKA Confessions!) Also, the album production is cohesive for the most part, but has some repetition amongst producers, especially Superstar sounding almost exactly like Hello by Martin Solveig (the same producer). All in all, i give it a 3 out of 5!

    Your thoughts??

I have to agree. I am a die-hard Madonna fan since her first single in the early 80's. I agree that there are some gems on this CD, like there are on all of her releases, however I found much of it hard to listen to. "Gang Bang" was nothing short of excruciating, after getting off to what I thought was a fun start with "Girl Gone Wild". "Masterpiece" was another high point for me.

I think the album is phenomenal. haven't stopped listening to it nonstop. And not a bad cut on it. My least favorite is I'm a Sinner. And my favorite switches hourly..LOL. if there's one weakness of the album, if I can really call it that, is that I don't have one standout favorite. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I think Gang Bang is the one polarizing song on the album. People either go bonkers for it or they loathe it. I can't get enough of it, myself.

It's a solid album. Definitely better than Hard Candy, and I would say I even prefer it over Confessions. This is an album that needs to be heard with the speakers turned up or with headphones.

Highlights for me are "I'm Addicted," "Some Girls" and "Love Spent." I like "Gang Bang" but I do think the song could use some editing, particularly the campy latter half.

Ultimately, I'm just happy to see Madonna continuing to make the music that she wants to make. The first two singles had me a little concerned.

My highlights are Gang Bang, I'm Addicted, I'm A Sinner, Falling Free, Turn Up The Radio, Some Girls and Love Spent.

Gang Bang seems to be the Marmite track of the album. I've seen a lot of love for it even from non fans but some people just think it's silly. Personally I think it's the best track she's done in ages and nothing fills me with more joy than hearing a vengeful/maniacal Madonna icon_biggrin.gif

I never would have guessed William Orbit was behind the boards for Gang Bang. He's struck a nice balance between retaining his ROL sound and also bringing a new production style to the table.

For me the album is up there with Music and reminds me of Bedtime Stories in that you can tell she worked with a few different producers. As much as I loved Confessions it did get a bit samey because Stuart Price handled the majority of the tracks and mixed them all.

As for Madonna chasing the youth market I don't personally agree with that observation. The only track on the album that sounds vaguely 'young' is Superstar but she also recorded Cherish when she was in her 30's so I don't think it's a calculated move. She has a very youthful spirit and it's helped her to stay at the top of her game for 25 years so her music reflects that.

My case of trying to be youthful, is her use of featured artists and need to constantly prove her stamina when she doesnt need to. She's already a powerhouse alone and doesnt need to show off with sounds that are the trend or what "young people" listen to today. She would be better off creating a new sound that is unique to her rather than using beats that producers are recycling on her, or that sound too similar to their previous works. I feel that she can do a lot better and despite the album having great pieces, it seems to be left simmering in other parts.

I don't get all the hate for I Fucked Up. I love that song. Maybe because it's the story of my love life, lol.

I rank MDNA #3 in her catalog. Ray of Light being #1, Like a Prayer at #2. Confessions on a Dance Floor at #4. I was not a fan of Confessions at first. I found it overall tinny and a step backward after the bold (if unsuccessful) creative leap that was American Life. (Madonna is just never going to be an electro Joni Mitchell no matter how badly she'd like to be.) But CoaDF has grown on me over the years, especially songs such as Get Together, Issacand Like It or Not.

Looking more closely at MDNA, my standout tracks are:
I'm Addicted - hot, sexy love song that makes me dance in my undies
Turn Up the Radio - reminds me of Into the Groove, that same musical emotion I mean
    I Don't Give A - as a fellow multitasker, I love this song
I'm a Sinner - cute, fun pop song
Love Spent - a lot going on here, lyrically and musically
Falling Free - all about that vocal
    and
I Fucked Up - see above

    My skips are:
Gang Bang - It's just too messy for my taste, though the beats are hot.
    Superstar - zzzzz
    Beautiful Killer - boring

I don't care if she is or is not trying to be youthful. She's Madonna. She can do whatever the fuck she wants. When I'm 53 I plan on doing whatever the fuck I want to, regardless of what any 20something thinks about it.

I'm disappointed so far. icon_sad.gif Will see how many times I have to listen to it to get into it. LOL.

My problem with the album is that the songs seem to lack... smoothness.

It's like Madonna is 'talking' in most of the songs rather than singing. It feels choppy.... I just prefer some harmony and flow....

I do like Falling Free, though.

Whoever said that this album is better than Confessions is TRIPPIN. So far, I prefer Hard Candy to this, but everyone seems to hate that album for some reason....

I actually thought Gang bang was among the best songs on there. "I Dont Give A" and "Falling Free" are my favs.

"Turn up the radio" and "Some girl" are shit.
I agree it's better than Hard Candy, at least.

I also think it's a lot better than Hard Candy, but not better than Ray of Light or Confessions. The William Orbit songs shine on this album. I wish she would've had a few more Orbit songs. My favs are: I'm a Sinner, Love Spent, Beautiful Killer, Masterpiece, and Turn Up The Radio.

I gotta say that I've been caught a gazillion times already dancing to this in my car. i get a bit euphoric when during "I'm Addicted" when it's coming up to the part where she sings, "I need to dance..." and it just breaks out. Bliss, baby!!!!

That is my favorite part of the song! At the end of the bridge...it's so Madonna!

Madonna's next album should be heavily influenced by dub, and produced only by Rusko & Skrillex lol

Agree! :-). Like the album so far, waiting for it to grow on me like they always do but wish she went a lot darker and harder with it. gang bang is my fave so far, besides girls gone wild.

Oh gawd no. Skrillex is the worst thing to ever happen to EDM. (Although that goddam Bangarang song is so catchy it's grown on me)

Skrillex makes the type of music that catches fire and flames out very quickly. He's a fad that will be replaced by the Next Big Thing in about 2-3 years.

Madonna's music has only been "dark" in a few spots of her career: a couple of songs on Like a Prayer, a few songs on Erotica, a few on Bedtime Stories, parts of American Life. It's otherwise been fun/sexy/joyful/exciting.

Those are my fav's too ac416. When I heardGang Bang I though to myself "this bitch has some real balls"...And we're talking about Madonna.

And for "Girl Gone Wild" I can't get the verses, bridge, and chorus out of my head. I've been singing or humming it since the video came out.

I also like "I don't give A", Its almost like she's rapping. and she's talking about real shit. Nikki Minaj's verse I could have done without, I mean her voice and attitude is a nice addition to the song but what she's saying has absolutely nothing to do with what the song is talking about.

...I must say, I listened to it yesterday after I received it, and my feelings were pretty much lukewarm. There are a few really good tracks...but I think the best songs have already been playing on the air. Don't get me wrong...I always have and always will love Madonna...we "grew up" with her...but she has had better albums, where you didn't feel as much like many of the songs were just filler tracks...each one was special. However, with that being said...I truly must remove my hat and bow to Madonna for doing what she has been doing for so long, always trying to stay ahead of the mainstream, and always doing things her way. I really love and respect her for these things...and let's face it...we haven't seen the last of her...she will probably knock all of us out with the next album icon_biggrin.gif

I really, really like it. I disliked Hard Candy, and personally think her best (non-compilation) album is Ray of Light, but this is good, and I've had it on a few times and can't find too much fault with it. Turn Up The Radio is the standout song for me, but I like Gang Bang and I'm Addicted.

Very smart review. I agree with a lot of it. This is what I posted to Facebook last night:

"MDNA: A very diverse album; her strangest compilation yet. 8/10. Reminds me of Like A Prayer minus a consistent theme. It will grow on you. Top 5 from the first listen: Falling Free, Gang Bang, Some Girls, Turn Up The Radio (tour opener alert!), Girl Gone Wild." I Fucked Up is excellent.

Re: "consistent theme" - by that I mean it's a bit all over the place. I see the redemption / loss themes; it's just not as 'tight' as Like A Prayer. Give Me All Your Luvin' is catchy, but weak and out of place on MDNA. icon_neutral.gif

I actually think She's Not Me and The Devil Wouldn't Recognize You could be traded with a couple of songs on this album to make it 10/10 - know what I mean? The highlights of Hard Candy with most of this, and you've got a brilliant album.

I love Gang Bang for it's originality and a Madonna song I never thought we'd hear.

seanp7, I completely agree that The Devil Wouldn't Recognize You would have been a perfect fit on MDNA. She's Not Me too, as a sister song to Some Girls and Love Spent. Give Me All Your Love could have gone on Hard Candy. Voices should be on MDNA too.

But I find that MDNA does in fact have an overall theme: the balance of transgression with acceptance. "I've been wronged...and I just need to accept and move on." I think this would've been clearer with better sequencing.

Imagine is laid out like this:
    Love Spent
    Beautiful Killer
Some Girls (because it's soooo about the "other women")
    Gang Bang
    Best Friend
    Masterpiece
    I Fucked Up
    Falling Free
    I Don't Give A
    I'm a Sinner
    I'm Addicted
    Girl Gone Wild
    Turn Up the Radio

(I would have edited out GMAYL, Superstar and B-Day Song)

I was going to type Voices too ;) I was just worried it's beat was too hip-hop and so it should stay on Hard Candy.
