    from Yahoo news:

Two men jailed for six months for kissing

The pair were initially found guilty of kissing each other in public.

The men, one Asian and one European, were told they must serve their six-month sentence. Their deportation once their jail sentence ends was also ordered.

Arabic language daily Alittihad reported that a witness claimed to have seen the men kissing on the mouth.

The two repeated their claim that they had hugged in greeting and that the European had kissed his friend on the head as he was leaving the UAE.

While this might come as a shock, there are places that do not approve of homosexual acts. The only way to fight the ongoing prejudices, however, is to solve the internal ones we have in our own community. How are we as a group of people suppose to get any respect when we are dicks to each other on the basis of ethnicity, height, weight, youthful looks, style, masculinity and femeninity, etc etc. You didn't see that kind of inner discrimination with anti slavery movements or the anti segregation movements....those groups were UNITED......

Until we homosexuals stop discriminating against each other and stop being flat out nasty to each other because we aren't all the ideal abercrombie model that people want to date (or be friends with apparently), we will continue to see acts like the one described in this post. I cannot feel bad, though as we bring it upon ourselves.

    HAHAHAHAHA.

Sounds like a plan. Let's get rid of all discrimination by getting rid of petty bitchiness.

Your notion that EVERYONE in the abolitionist movement had the EXACT SAME OPINION regarding tactics, timing, etc is absurd. Read this: http://www.teachushistory.org/second-great-awakening-age-reform/articles/historical-background-antislavery Some people wanted to send the slaves back to Africa. Others didn't. There were those who thought women shouldn't be involved in the aboltionist movement. Others thought it was ok.

Do I need to go into the history of the Civil Rights movement and the personality conflicts there?

Wherever you have more than one person involved, rivalries, clashes of values, ethics and experiences rear their heads.

I believe diversity of experience, personality, values and tactics strengthen us and I don't shy away from debate or disagreement. These things make us human, they only divide you if you let them.

Your simplistic, black or white view just unmasks your ignorance of the true nature of human struggle.

If we followed your advice, gays would still be in the closet, women would still be treated as property, Jews would be not allowed to hold public office and blacks would be back in the fields.

It takes a combination of education, movement politics, legislation and advocacy to move a society forward.

Your "let's just wait till we all get along" non-plan is amazingly stupid.

That may be the silliest thing I've ever read.

Yes, "gay" will suddenly become legal in the Muslim world if only gays stop fighting over masc/fem threads! It's so obvious! It's the "only way to fight ongoing prejudices"...

If you do go. there is some fun to be had.

You can find a good job in UAE. You just can not be gay. Okay. Like I said you can find fun in Dubai if you know where to look. Not everyone is going to accept you. But it is there country.

I've always found it interesting how Americans and Europeans complain that there are too many immigrants in their countries. Yet I remember reading that 71.4% UAE's population is made up of immigrants! Crazy to think that native Emiratis don't even make up a third!

LOL! Invasion and colonization are not a uniquely European or American phenomenon, though it seems like it because European colonization is fairly 'recent' in our entire species' history with the aftermath still playing out.

Ugh! I am by no means a Rick Santorum supporter -- I loathe the man -- but really? Surely you're brighter than that? Even if Rick Santorum wanted to prohibit GAY, he wouldn't be able to do it. Not to mention the fact that Rick Santorum is NOT going to be elected President anyway, so your whole point is just ridiculous. As for the UAE...wild horses couldn't drag me to that part of the world.

Dubai has great shopping, great nightlife and a lot of glamour and glitter. Though anything gay is terrible and forbidden.

First off, if you dont like the UAE, don't come, but don't start hating a place you probably have never been to, second, if you had, you would know that men and woman walking along hand in hand and/or kissing in public is frowned upon also (while not illegal) and that recently a straight couple were banged up for banging on the beach!!

We get it, the UAE's laws are conservative but even the US and Europe haven't overnight decided gay kissing, marriage or adoption is legal, some in your own country still opose that still!! One cant expect to put western pressures and ideologies on an extremely conserrvative culture that has only in the latter part of this century turned itself from a group of tribal communities and leaders to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world!!! If it was all that bad, people would not come here. Having lived abroad practically all my life and travelled a lot, you learn to respect different people and their culture and you realise what is painted in the press isn't necessarily what you see when you visit/live in a particular country. The Emirates is one such case and articles like this, while shocking, dont illustrate the general pervading attiude of public affection in public (straight or gay). Head to downtown and you can see plenty of Arabian, Indian, Pakistani men holding hands and kissing in public when greeting each other, that's their culture, start going for some tonsil action and yes, it will get stares and get you into trouble...straight or gay!!! The locals here are some of the kindest, funniest, family orientated and genuine people you can meet. Respect goes both ways and goes far here!!

Change takes time, but there are worse countries in the world to look to that treat gay men in a far worse manner than here and The Emirates is doing a pretty good job of meshing its traditional values with the wants of the western tourist and immigrant work force. See for yourself, rather than reading it online!!

Sorry AFL35, but any country that has death-sentencing on the books for homosexual sex is going to get a hate-on from me. icon_mad.gif

EDIT: and look at the map. There are plenty of countries where Islam is dominant but where there aren't such draconian laws.

So you're saying that homosexuals make laws prohibiting others from behaving in a certain way that's correlated with their strong belief and preference too? Everyone is nasty to each other. But homosexuals don't pass and reinforce hate legislation. You're comparing trivial gay banter to countries that legal enforce homosexuality as a crime. That's like me saying, "OMG YOU GUYS STOP YELLING AT CHINA FOR NOT MAKING TIBET FREE...YOU CAN'T LIKE JUDGE THEM BECAUSE YOU KNOW...I SAW YOU BEING RUDE IN THAT RESTAURANT THE OTHER DAY AND THAT'S THE SAME THING YOU KNOW!?!?!?"
