"An Oklahoma church canceled a controversial gun giveaway for teenagers at a weekend youth conference.

Windsor Hills Baptist had planned to give away a semiautomatic assault rifle until one of the event's organizers was unable to attend.

    ...

Friday evening, Ross said the gun giveaway had been canceled. Pastor emeritus Jim Vineyard, who ran the event, injured his foot and wouldn’t be able to attend. The gun giveaway was also removed from the church Web site.

Ross said the church would give the gun away next year instead. He said the church spent $800 buying the gun for the promotion."

When interviewed the Pastor had to take time away from his Moonshine distillery to say,

"I just shot myself in my dang foot is what I did."

Jesus with an assault rife--that's a new one for these nuts to come up with! I guess the beatitudes aren't part of their Christianity. Only in the US

The fact that a churh would give out a gun in the first place is one of the scariest things I have ever heard.

Just remember when Jeeeesus wrote the con-stee-too-shun he meant for us to have all manner of firepower with which to defend ourselves against A-rabs, neeegros, china men, mex-eeee-cans and all kinds of queer-o-sexual Demon-crats. Look it up, it's in the Bible!

Odd, giving a rifle to a teen since they can't legally purchase one until they are 18. 18 is in the teens so maybe this whole thing is blown out of proportion and there is an age limit on the giveaway.

Kind of odd though, a church giving away a firearm.

Maybe the Baptists teach their young early on how to plug Mormons? I heard there is an amount of animosity between the groups.

Wow...I didn't realize there were so many right winged conservatives in favor of gun control here. Once again you've collectively bashed organized religion due to one church's decision to do something.

I also find providing guns as a "give away" inappropriate, whether a church or a rifle club, but you all failed to mention anything else in the story. I believe it mentions that the "church Web site shows the shooting competition from last year’s conference. A gun giveaway was part of the event last year." and “We have 21 hours of preaching and teaching throughout the week,” and "conference isn’t all about guns, but rather about teens finding faith.". The fact that the give away was a gun instead of a fishing pole or a pocket knife as sure fired you guys up!

In our society where keeping teens busy and out of trouble AND in an area of the country where guns are more accepted for sporting or hobbies, I find it ironic that you guys would jump on the Caslon band wagon to, yet again, to take your shots (pun intended) at a religious group.

So are you offended by a "gun give away" or by the fact that it was a church giving it away. Why should they not be able to give away a gun as a prize for a marksman shooter? Would you be bitching if it were the local sportsman's club giving it away? I didn't think so!

I think this is a typical over reaction to something that could have and probably would have been nothing more than a gathering of teenagers learning God's word and having some fun in activities such as shooting (I suspect that would be targets and/or clay pigeons, not people)!

Give the Christian bashing a rest and direct your energies towards something more constructive!

LOL! I don't need a bandwagon to take shots at people of faith, whatever the faith, but it's the irony here that's so profound. Come to Jesus, learn to shoot a gun! Yeehaw!
