Periodically, I have mentioned in some of the forums that I am in the travel industry. I have also shared some stories about my wonderful employer and how cheap they are (remember the box of Kraft Mac and Cheese I received from the CEO last Christmas??).

Some of my closest RJ buddies know I have been "recruited" by another employer in the same building I work in and after a long process (creating a position to best utilize my talents, budget issues, etc), I am happy to say.....

"I kicked the cheap ass employer to the curb! I'm outta there!!"

Of course, it was not without a fight....A couple of days before I was to give my notice, the company decided to furlough 15 employees in my office and I was one of them. And being the finger-pointers they are, the reason for all this was due to budget cutbacks and the fact that I "should have sold more and they wouldn't be in the financial crunch they are in."

Liars! The company is going headfirst toward bankruptcy/liquidation/a buyout because they are losing a major account (that brings substantial revenue for them) and they purchased some technology that has never worked correctly since it was installed (but they wanted the "free" throw-ins this company provided).

I'm so happy I'm out of there. My peace of mind has returned. I'm much more relaxed and actually feel like doing something besides beating myself up or dreading each new day. The new gig starts April 13 and I will be combining my travel knowledge and sales abilities with something new and something I have always wanted to do, real estate. The money will be decent. I'll be appreciated for a job well done (for the first time in 5 1/2 years) and I have opportunities for advancement (which I didn't have at the other place).

So I ask.....Have any of you ever felt trapped, beaten up, unwanted and unappreciated by your employer or employers? How long did you wait it out? Have you worked for companies that were in financial peril only to blame the employees for their demise?

Talk to me. Let's hear it. I know I'm not the only one to have gone through career hell here.

(btw, I am really enjoying my time away.....I'm icon_biggrin.gif )

Good to hear! Congratulations! I hope that the new company treats you well and you find working there satisfying. icon_smile.gif

In regards to your question, I have never experienced anything like that. I have been self employed for most of my work history.

Thanks, guys. You know, this morning I did something I have not done in a very, very long time.....

    I smiled.
    I laughed.

And...I won't have to work weekends (including Sundays until 8:30 PM).

I'm actually going to have.....a life.

    I love it!

Congratulations, it's got to be wonderful...still, I can only dream.
Never ceases to amaze me at how bad people are at management; completely out of touch, and God for bid you have a suggestion on how to make things run smoother with more productivity...I normally get the Xanax look, where the eyes just glaze over: "this effects my two hour lunch, how?"

At my last job, I cleaned up dead people for $12 an hour. I'm talking blood, skull fragments, fingers, eyeballs... going through brain covered contents and cleaning/disinfecting everything.. cutting out flooring and walls because they were soaked in body fluids. The company I worked for charged (usually) thousands of dollars for this service. But on average I was paid around 3-5 hours worth. After taxes... let's just say $40.

They refused to change the payment arrangement, insisting we should be thankful we had a job in this economy.

At the company Xmas party, they gave everyone $500 bonuses, and there were lots of games with cash prizes, too. It wasn't until after the holidays though, that while in the warehouse breakroom (it's a large place that does a lot of different things) .. I noticed a sign on the vending machines that read, "proceeds from vending support company Christmas party."

Handing our own money back to us, with a smile.

But I was trapped there. I worked 70hr weeks at all hours, sometimes working 15-17 hours straight. I couldn't just quit. The lights have to stay on, after all. But.. after being there for about a year, a BIG opportunity came through. I finally got to turn in my shit and leave. Now, I work for Ford, building cars and trucks. It's hard work. But after this past year... it's like walking on cotton balls.

My life is the things I do OUTSIDE of work again. I don't have to wince in fear every time my phone goes off. I'm being paid fairly.... I mean, I literally almost cried when the weight of it all hit me, that I'm free from that place. So congrats to the both of us. We deserve it.

I've been there. One of the reaskns I've been able to focus on my "quest" is because my stress level is so much lower after leaving the tyranny of the bank I used to work for.

I know I'm a terrible person for this, but now when i visit my hometown, I like to stop in there to say hello, but it's most so they can see how happy i am and i can see how miserable they are. icon_twisted.gif

Not quite. It was an old fashioned drug test. I would have thought the inside of my cheek would have been swabbed with a q-tip (insert your own comment here).

After I had the drug test, I saw an old episode of "Real Housewives of Atlanta" and the woman was getting a DNA test with the aforementioned q-tip to the cheek. Her response was, "Honey, this is removin' all my lip gloss." Too funny!

Sad thing is, no vacay time until 2013, but since I will have weekends off, I need to head to Ft. Lauderdale to meet up with some of the guys from here and have some much overdue fun. Since the company I'm working for is a major hotel chain, I believe I get 40 percent off best available rate at their properties.

Congrats! Good riddance to that old crappy employer you had! I am sure this employer will treat you much better and with the respect you deserve.

I know how you feel as I went through this last year and now I have an employer that treats me with great respect and have great hours so I can actually have a social life now. All I can say is LIFE IS GOOD!!!

I will let you know. The "settling in" process hasn't even started yet. Don't laugh, but I'm almost temped to go to the Mai-Kai for dinner! I know the place has been there since Moses was in Pampers, but I actually ate there many times with my family when we used to go to Ft. Lauderdale on vacation. Last time I was there....oh.....40 years ago, maybe!

Thanks to all that have posted above for the well wishes. I'm catching up on sleep, reading, hanging out here, gardening, and a host of other diversions I have not had the opportunity to even think of doing.

You guys are the best (even you JPtheBITCH).

It's still open, gone to a few functions there, less than 2 miles from us. But not a place I just go to eat.

If you come here of course you can try it again, would be nice to relive memories. But I'll show you other places, for breakfast, lunch & dinner, that I really think will delight you. We can go to a different place every day for a week, and still not visit them all. So let me know when the time comes.

Next you are going to tell us that you also get national health care and don't have to worry about losing your insurance even if you lose your job, not being able to pay for your medical bills, or losing the roof over your head and any savings you have because of possible medical bills. ;)

    Congratulations !
The smartest thing you did was to have the courage to take action.

It would be interesting to know how many people love their job, like their job, or hate their job.

It would also be interesting to know how many of those people who hate their job, never do anything to change the situation, and continue to suffer for years and years. I have a feeling that it's a very high number.

"So I ask.....Have any of you ever felt trapped, beaten up, unwanted and unappreciated by your employer or employers? How long did you wait it out?"

    Oh yes.
I waited til they gave me their take-this-or-else-get-laid-off voluntary separation package.

Congrats, turtleneckjock. Finding better work (wages/appreciation) was something I didn't manage to do.
