    Cool study...

"Researchers in Sweden gave a battery of psychological tests to 57 male and female soccer players. About half the players were athletes from Sweden's elite Allsvenskan league. The other half came from lower Division I teams.

Researchers found top athletes scored higher than 95% of the population on certain measures of brain function."

"Health must not be sacrificed to learning. A strong body makes the mind strong."
    -Thomas Jefferson, 1785

Jefferson may have been on to something.

However, the study only found a positive correlation between elite soccer players and developed executive functions. Sports like soccer would definitely reward a superior executive function, but what about sports that require less on-the-fly decision-making, like distance running or olympic weightlifting? It would have been interesting if their sample included athletes from a variety of different sports.

I agree. I'd be curious to see how soccer players compare to popular American sports like football and baseball.

It's interesting but not surprising, there is a lot of calculative split-second decisions that need to be made during a match.

I fail to see what is cute about someone being dumb... But each to their own, I guess.

Tennis and soccer players in my state tended to be damn good students as well as musicians.

My circle of friends composed of half of my high school's valedictorians. All of us played sports and were in some form of music.

This. Although there were complete dumbasses that played too but the majority of people that did sports and music in my high school scored high on exams. That's why I have become a fan of the Renaissance man.

Makes sense to me. To be elite in a sport requires strategy in addition to superior sports skills (unless coach has control of you all the time).

I'm not surprised that a lot of top athletes would score high on executive function.
The biggest difference in skill usually comes down to how hard you work. Some people make themselves work for it a lot of others slack off...

There is a test all NFL drafted players have to take to see if they are basically( not totally dumb).... the wonderlic test. See the below site to take it and see how you compare to some notable players.
