The dumb part is the kids have no escape. If they claim rape or w/e, they will be ostracized or go to prison themselves.

I read that article too. Scary isn't it - pedophilia is fine in Afghanistan but to be gay is virtually a death sentence! The bit that stuck in my mind was that that they get a new younger one once their current one starts to get facial hair!

Quote from articleMany of the men who have bachas are also married. But Assadula said he had never been attracted to women.
''You cannot take wives everywhere with you,'' he said, referring to the gender segregation in social settings that is traditional in Afghanistan. ''You cannot take a wife with you to a party, but a boy you can take anywhere.

I can imagine them explaining themselves. "We realized our extreme oppression of women was harming ourselves so of course the only reasonable thing to do was to rape boys."

Before you comment on another culture, learn their history so you don't make ignorant statement. Dancing boys or Bacha Bazi is ancient traditional that is far older than islam.

Just because its ancient and "tradition" does not justify it. Im so sick and tired of that being the scapegoat for ridiculous acts and methods in this day and age.

After all, where do you think those "72 virgins" come from? Those aren't virgin women...they're virgin boys dressed like bitches.

I was going to say the same thing... I have noticed the OP uses the word "Allah" assuming that they are Arab or something. Afghan people speak Dari (Persian) and Pashto (non-Arabic speaking language). It because they are "Muslims", that doesn't mean they use the world Allah mean God in Arabic. Afghan people are not Arabs. Yes there are many Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews use the word Allah.

I hope you learn something OP (offshore).

All i see in this thread is another islamophobia.[/quot

Many of the left want hate and put so much of the gay communities misery onto religion, and the conservative right, and not our own community's actions. Now all the death and murder that I was to witness first hand that come out during and after the gay Plague Era had nothing to do with religion or culture. But many don't want to talk about that now do they, no they want to play the victim and lay all the blame on others. Just as religion is not free of sin, nor are the gay communities. Just as racism is not a one way street.

O wow, I never realised that! Yes of course... Allah simply means "God" so it doesnt matter if you are Jewish, Christian or Muslim..the word is the same..

We're not justifying it... what we are saying is that it is not necessarily a "religious" tradition from Islam... it is older than Islam.... just the same way Christmas trees and Easter eggs are older than Christianity.. whether you condone the practice or not is another discussion which should be irrespective of religion

This is an interesting article about sexual expression in a different culture. I just spent a few weeks in Afghanistan, not as military, but in Kabul working with kids and some adults. This is in addition to a month in Iraq in a similar situation a few years ago. Obviously only enough time to get a basic taste of the culture, but a few things are important to note. In general, the Persian culture is surprisingly tolerant towards male homosexuality. We in the west make an enormous deal of the Taliban and their ultra-conservative behavior, but remember that they are reviled in a good part of Afghanistan and are definitely perceived of as having an "Arabicized" version of Islam. In Kurdistan (an Iranic culture and language) I found it was much more acceptable to be out as a gay guy than as a Jew! Afghanistan was more conservative, but I noticed teenage boys that I was working with freely expressing physical attraction to other boys.

I think the oppression of women in Afghanistan is a far more serious problem. A straight friend of mine over there made the point that it was actually a lot more fun to be a gay man there-- because there was simply no access to women whatsoever. Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, he said Afghanistan was the best place in the world to be gay!

That said, I of course don't approve of child rape and pedophilia and we should be trying to find a way to protect these kids. But some of these comments show a lack of understanding of the nuances of culture over there (again, which I am only beginning to learn).

I have appreciated some of the above discussion about history, cultural background in trying to understand why this might be a somewhat accepted practice. It is easy for us to condemn it on the basis of the action alone.

It would be interesting to delve into why and how ...... that said, just because it has "cultural history" is no reason to give it justification.
    If it's wrong, its wrong.

I agree, hndsmksn! I think where the OP went wrong was the Allah reference. Afghanistan's treatment of women may also be "cultural" but it is unequivocally wrong and destructive to their society. We in the West have also had to let go of some of our "culture" to move towards a better society for all!

If you knew history, you'd agree that the Allah reference is spot on. Afgan rule of law is based on religion. Anywhere you find rampant human rights abuses, you will find a religion as the philosophic underpinning, even if the people involved are not religious. Pull back the curtain...and you find closeted Republican politicians with gay prostitutes , Catholic Church sex abuses, Afgan dancing boys and other horrific displays of human exploitation.

The alternative to religion is the The Enlightenment....something that "Social Conservatives" try to eliminate with every election.

And yet the Taliban, a religious group, tried to put a stop to the practice. Not saying they did so for the most honorable reasons.

Many religious groups, including mine, teach against and do what they can to stop exploitation of children and other vulnerable people.

Religious groups are the most egregious violators of children.

Motto of churches is....get'em while they're young and impressionable. If they're not indoctrinating them with their bizarre and unachievable system of ethics...they're supporting, harboring and defending the adult members who are serial child abusers, like the various religious cults, Catholic church and numerous conservative Christian congregations.

I got sucked into a morning of reading and a PBS documentary on YouTube about this...

I'm so disgusted that people would do this... not surprised by how horrid men can be, but disgusted and so highly disturbed nonetheless.

    I literally feel sick.
Those men are fucking pig fucks.

For those guys who think it is a form of cultural expression, check out the PBS special and reconsider.

If you think this practice is in any form acceptable you are as deprived as the adult men exploiting those young boys.

There is NOTHING acceptable about this practice, whether it is based on religious or cultural ideologies. Child exploitation is simply wrong.

So non-religious people are less egregious?
