I got a massage from one of the Chinese places down the street. They have always done a good job but no one there speaks a word of English. About midway through the massage, I feel this strange sensation on my back and sucking noises. The guy left the room for several minutes. He had placed these glass cups on my back and created an intense vacuum with a pump. They hurt like hell and I was relieved to see him take them off. So now I have these very dark marks on my back. I'm told they normally go away within a day or so. Well, it's been 5 days and although they're fading some, I'm worried some of this will not go away. Anyone ever had this done? Any chance of this permanently scarring me?

See a doctor to know for sure, but you might only have some very large hickeys.

They'll all go away in about another week or so. Heat decreases the look for a while,, but they'll return only lighter the next morning. Did you feel any benefit from the treatment over all?

From the massage, yes. I think the suction cups is a bunch of pseudo science personally.

It's bruising. It will go away in another couple of days. You could use heat pads to help recirculate the blood clots there, and take aspirin. It's minor damage.

I come from Asia originally and I don't think it's a cause for concern. I haven't tried it before but I know of people who have tried this. They are fine and the marks do go off. I assume it's safe.

It's bruising caused by the rapid expansion of capillaries. It'll heal, but if I were you, I'd go for a deep tissue massage instead - I think it's more effective. Besides, any medical practitioner, Western or not, should always explain to you what is being done and why. The fact that this was not clearly communicated to you is a cause for concern more than anything else. Drink a lot of water and take ibuprofen.

    1. he should have wiped your back with a warm rag to remove the toxins drown out (i hope he did)
    2. you should have gotten a massage after that to helpd aleviate the HiCKEY effect

I've had cupping done before by one of my masseurs who also does acupuncture (he is Chinese medicine specialist actually).
This appears to be extreme - left on too long perhaps? Should definitely have been explained to you and would normally have disappeared within first 2-3 days at most.

    1. No, he did not wipe my back.
    2. No, he did not massage my back afterwards....only before.

Well, I now have a second thing I will tell them not to do if I go back there. Do NOT crack my neck and do NOT use the cups! I mean, what if I were going on a cruise or on my way to the beach or something?

I have a fantastic massage therapist who does full body deep tissue. But I go to this Chinese place frequently because it's walking distance from work and I can walk in and they will sniff out any trigger points and attack it and relieve the pain. This comes at a cost though....this is NOT a relaxing massage! They go to work on you like a fucking ninja with knees and elbows in your back. I go here to get fixed so I can continue working. Nothing more.

The cups are usually done if you have a fever. It helps 'bring out the heat'. I don't think it's that great for general muscular pain though, probably helps a deep pain more.

Get them to do a coin rub on you (they put heat lotion on your back then scratched your back with a coin until your skin forms red welts), you'll prefer the cups after that icon_biggrin.gif

    Ouch!

Judging by the intensity, those will take a couple of weeks to clear.

Besides the fact that he went beyond the norm of accepted intensity for a therapeutic effect, no one should ever cup without informing the person that there may be residual bruising.

Take aspirin an go on with your life. If someone ask, say you were making out with an octopus and things got intense.

My family specializes in massage therapy. The cups are mostly used here for not the suction of muscle or blood, but for the suction of the toxin lodged deep inside muscle strands. Makes it easier for your lymphatic system to then remove them past the lymph nodes. But those top 2 are pretty traumatic. I would recommend seeing a doctor for those, otherwise, the others should go away in a week or so - depending how sensitive your skin is.
