This is a cool way to decide:

Why not pay for your own meal? That's "fair and equitable".

That works for millionaires, not a big group of middle class people though

If it's a group of friends just split it equally because it wont be a one time thing and what you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabout's.

In my experience going out to eat in groups people have very set personalities when it comes time to split the bill. Some consume 18 dollars, think if they throw in a $20 it's more than enough, and don't realize with tax and tip they actually owe somewhere around $26-$28. And others have to perpetually pay more than their share to cover these people.

It works better in my part of the world because taxes are built in and tipping isn't required.

It's a game, and all want to prove they can pay the bill, albeit not wanting to get stuck with it. There was this American a number of years ago, filmed swimming in the courts, when the skies were to open up during the Australian open; the courts were flooded.

Now on his last night in melbourne he invited many of the friends he made while down here, I being one of them. He foolisly announced he would pay for the night; we did break his bank; icon_lol.gif

    Mixed feelings...

I feel like (and I know some people will absolutely disagree with me) it depends on the wording of how the dinner arrangement was made...

If you are talking to someone and getting to know them and you both come up with the plan to go to dinner, then I think that splitting the bill or paying for your own meal is appropriate.

However, if someone says "I want to take you to dinner"....to me, that implies that they are paying.

That's why I ask for separate checks for each person. No need to split the check.

Credit Card Roulette... or CCR as we call it.
My friends usually do it when we're out drinking. We play for whoever is going to pay for the next round of shots.
