    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/04/13/president-obama-paid-lower-tax-rate-than-his-secretary/

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama had a combined income of $789,674 in 2011 but paid a lower tax rate than the president's secretary, who made less than $100,000, the White House confirmed Friday.

The Obamas paid an effective rate of 20.5 percent. White House aides would not reveal presidential secretary Anita Breckenridge’s tax rate but confirmed it was higher than the first family's rate. Breckenridge earned $95,000 last year.

The Obamas' rate is less than the 30 percent the president wants millionaires to pay under his proposed Buffett Rule.

“The president’s secretary pays a slightly higher rate ... than the president on her substantially lower income, which is exactly why we need to reform our tax code and ask the wealthiest to pay their fair share,” White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage told Fox News.

The release Friday of the tax returns for the president and the family of Vice President Joe Biden came on the same day in which the Obama campaign in Chicago attacked likely GOP-presidential nominee Mitt Romney for, so far, releasing only his most recent tax returns.

“Did he pay a lower income tax rate than the 13.9 percent he paid in 2010 and is that why he opposes the Buffett Rule to ensure millionaires don’t pay less taxes than middle-class families?” Obama campaign manager Jim Messina asked in a press release from the campaign.

Later in the day, a Romney spokeswoman said Romney has file for an extension and would make public his 2011 returns before the November election.

The Obamas paid more than $160,000 in federal taxes last year.

The president's 2011 federal income tax return shows reported adjusted gross income of about $790,000 last year. About half of the first family's income is the president's salary. The White House says the rest comes from sales of Obama's books.

The White House released a copy of the president's tax return, which also shows charitable donations of more than $172,000.

Obama is donating after-tax proceeds from his children's book to the Fisher House Foundation. The charity helps veterans and military families receiving medical treatment.

For Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, this year's tax return looks almost identical to last year's.

Returns for 2011 released by the White House show the Bidens paid $87,900 in federal taxes on adjusted gross income of $379,035.

Click here to see Vice President Biden's tax return.

Their income was $143 below their 2010 return, but their tax bill was $1,274 higher. In both cases, the effective tax rate was just over 23 percent.

On the latest return, the Bidens listed $5,540 in donations to charity.

Most of the couple's income came from the vice president's salary of $225,521 and Jill Biden's wages of just over $82,000 for teaching at Northern Virginia Community College.

Yup, but more than Romney and Obama is asking for legislation to increase his taxes.

    What was your point?

Yes Obama paid a lower tax rate than his secretary at 20.5% of his income which is about 1/3 of Romney's income, of which he only paid about 15% which would be quite a bit lower than his secretary.

But Obama thinks with a bigger picture in mind, he is concerned with more than just his own interests, unlike Romney, who would push to lower his tax rate and all the very rich with similar or higher incomes than his. Obama is pushing for the "Beffett Rule" which would have even billionaires like Warren Buffet paying a good deal closer to the tax rates their secretaries pay. In other words Obama thinks he and others with incomes like his should be paying more taxes, more like the rates of their secretaries. You can bet that Obama will be hit by more taxes if the 'Buffet Rule' is passed and isn't it great to have a 'selfless' president !!!

Lets see what Romney has to say about the "buffet rule"being considered now in the Senate, Will Romney go along with that or will he stick to the already tried and failed Bush Idea of giving himself and other very rich people among the 1%, even bigger tax breaks, because they are "the job creators", you know !!! the ones who DID NOT CREATE JOBS as the bushies promised.

SoCal, have you no shame in bringing up this topic as you did while leaving out the most important facts that cut your point all to pieces ? by the way, your point is so twisted, what exactly is your point? It just isn't adding up !!

I didn't even see the story, other than it was from FOX news... that was enough to stop. It isn't a legit means of getting information. I'll wait until I get it from a grounded source, thanks.

I assume you did notice that your "grounded source" was the same as 'Fair and Balanced' ?

Btw, I'll not be voting for him.

Even the "National Enquirer" can get it right occasionally.... however I would put more stock into that publication than I would FAUX.

And as far as your vote... I'm confident there will be more.. than less.

Clearly, socalfitness has seen the light, agrees with the President that the super rich like Obama and Buffet should not be earning more than their secretaries, and will support the center-left's efforts to raise marginal tax rates in order to pay down the nation's debt.

    Praise God, Hallelujah.

I only make a mid-upper 5-digit income per year; but seeing that number for the leader of our country AND his wife makes me think our country is broke.

There are individuals in this country who make several times more than that.

Why the fuck does the leader of our country make pocket change compared to the top 1%?

Edit: And so what if he didn't have a high tax rate? He's our President! He should even have to pay taxes.

Except at his current income Obama will not fall into the "Buffett Rule".

Look at your own taxes guys...I (and I bet many others on here) HAVE A HIGHER EFFECTIVE TAX RATE THEN THE OBAMAS & they out earned me by almost 600% & I'm just a single working man.

He can go sue someone if he doesnt feel he makes enough. Remember this also....He is going to rake it in when he is no longer president and I am sure he will do EVERYTHING to pay as little as possible.......JUST LIKE EVERYONE.

Im more concerned with that segment of Americans that has NO skin in the game and pays NOTHING.

An except from the President's speech on taxes in America and urging Congress to pass the Buffet Rule

But the thing is, for most Americans like me, tax rates are near their lowest point in 50 years. In 2001 and 2003, the wealthiest Americans received two huge new tax cuts. We were told these tax cuts would lead to faster job growth. Instead, we got the slowest job growth in half a century, and the typical American family actually saw its income fall.

What a complete and utter lie. You're saying that 50% of America are "senior citizens and disabled" which is completely not true.

Far right partisan hacks and Christian Fundi fanatics like SoCal and the OLD GEEZER for example, are unembarassable, their fanaticism causes them to shamelessly believe their own propaganda. After all 'god' is on their side, they're fighting the good fight to bring back their country to 'godly' christian conservative principles. Let no reality stand in the way of their Ideology.

Fanatics like them are always right, and uncompromising because as they say, when your right you don't have to compromise, so neither can they be embarassed.

This pretty much represents most of those who live and breath Fox News for their supposed facts.

JB didn't say "income tax". He said people with "no skin in the game", so there's nothing to correct.

Payroll taxes (which are capped and paid disproportionately by poor, working and middle class families) accounted for nearly 40% of all federal revenue in 2010. That's plenty of skin.

And just so we're clear, 1500 millionaires paid no federal income tax in 2009. That's the real crime, not that someone's grandmother living on SSI and Medicare didn't pay income tax.
