Yeah he probably still cares, but he has no political capital anymore. The US economy is tanking, Afghanistan is struggling and Iraq still has issues (although it is better then it used to be).
I feel sorry for the next US president, there are too many problems (the economy, the price of oil, the budget deficit and trade deficit, aging baby boomers and medicare/medicaid, crime, many aging Americans do not have enough saved for retirement, global warming, etc.) and very few solutions. Some congressmen seem to be more influenced by lobbyists then voters and are not willing to work with the President to try and come up with some workable solutions.
Also many Americans still seem to be stuck on the myths they have been brought up on, and are not seeing how much the rest of the world has changed. They focus on China and its' "cheap" labour (in actual fact labour costs in China are skyrocketing). Meanwhile Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia, India and several other developing economies are also busting out.
We live in fascinating times to say the least.
