Quite an interesting article from The Guardian. Maybe there are some RJ'ers in South Carolina who may agree/disagree?

The ONLY thing that I disagree with here is the campaign slogan such and such city is so gay. I believe that the WHOLE state should have been involved somehow regarding that campaign or at least approved by the "higher ups".

What I disagree with is the way the "higher" ups are handling it, no need to go over board!

    Actually, it's pretty ironic...

The phrase "that's so gay" usually means "that's so lame"... and the politicians here are the ones that are lame, so I'll go ahead and revise the slogan:

South Carolina is so gay - and not in the good way.

    Ha!

I emailed the senator. In this economy he shouldn't be rejecting tourism income.

I have several straight friends from South Carolina and I haven't had any issue with acceptance - in fact they wanted to hang-out with my partner and myself...

As for the tag line "South Carolina is so gay" I think there would be issues in many of the more conservative states - but at least it started some controversy and hopefully discussion. The gay community has lots of tourism dollars to pump into the economy and South Carolina should get on the bandwagon.

Well they certainly don't like gays there:

Anderson man chases gay son from home:
ANDERSON COUNTY — Violence broke out Sunday in Anderson when an 18-year-old man returned home from a gay pride parade and was assaulted by his father.

According to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, the battering took place about 1 p.m. Sunday on P Street.

During the assault, the teen's 49-year-old father yelled, cursed, swung a baseball bat, prayed and tried to “cast the demon of homosexuality out of him,” according to the teen's version of events to Deputy S.C. Weymouth, the incident report states.

About 2 p.m. Wednesday, the teen said his father punched him when he returned to the house for clothes that he left on Sunday, the report states.

The teen told deputies that his father “has a problem with him being gay and that is why he hit him with the baseball bat Sunday,” Weymouth said in his report.

The teen filed both complaints about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputies, who have not been able to make immediate contact with the teen's father, report that both incidents are under investigation.

i'm not going to try to defend sc's lgbt record; however, i am from sc and my family embraces me completely. as horrible as that story is, and many others like it (google: sean kennedy), the entire state isn't completely mired in hatred. there are changes being achieved here.

I am not one bit suprised by the criticism of South Carolina. How can you expect this predominately rural, poor, conservative southern state to be gay friendly when they are still very racist. Until a few years ago, they were still flying the confederate stars and bars from atop the Statehouse in Columbia. Given South Carolina's track record in the last seven presidential elections and keeping arch conservative Strom Thurmond in the US Senate for as long as they did, I am not suprised at the negative image that South Carolina has earned. icon_neutral.gif

Ok, enough fucking dissing on South Carolina. We have our ups and downs just like every other state. If you don't like it, then get out. Like I said before.. it's the BIBLE BELT. Lots of rednecks, southern babtists, and homophobic straight people. Just like everywhere else, there is always going to be someone who hates the lifestyle. You can't just pick one of them and bash the whole state because of those ignorant pricks. You just have to choose your friends wisely. I've had friends tell me to go to hell when they find out about me, I've had friends say, I know.. and accept me for who I am.. just like my family, some accepted and some doesn't. It's just the world we live in. I could name several different states that are the same, or even worse. So why South Carolina? Hmmm? Tell me that. Don't diss it if you don't live here GD.

I have some additional bad news for you South Carolinians. Your state is ranked the fifth most obese in the nation. The percentage of South Carolina's population that is obese is 29%. The percentage of South Carolians that are overweight is 59%. Now your state has health and weight problems in addition to its racism and homophobia.

I think a state with a lilman can't be all that bad -- lucky as a matter of fact. We used to be practically neighbors icon_wink.gif
