I'm posting an ad looking to move with roommates somewhere closer to the city but am wondering if I should include that I'm gay in the ad. I haven't included it before but it's something I'm considering...

It seems slightly unnecessary though, especially given that that I'm in NYC and it's a non-issue for many.

    What do you guys think?

Yes, what if you end up with a crazy homophobic asshole as your roommate, better safe than sorry.

I wish we lived in a perfect world where such details didn't matter.

We don't so be upfront from the start.

Well, if you don't include it in the ad, then you should mention it when you interview your potential roommates.

Yup, I did and it was the first thing in the title. It keeps all the homophobes away and let's the real, honest, good people help find you. Or maybe my amazing luck was 1 in a million, who knows ;)

If you're planning on bringing dates home, probably a good idea.

Yeah, you should mention it in the add; that way you'll avoid awkward conversations once you move in.

An easy solution is to run your ad only in your local gay newspaper(s).

I always mention it. It keeps the people that have a problem with it from contacting me at all, and usually attracts other gay dudes. Which is the best sort of person for me to live with. Not lesbians tho. Never again.

Very true. We often hear the line, "I don't feel the need to announce I'm gay." In many situations that is true, but unfortunately in this situation it is necessary. When you share an apartment with someone, your private lives overlap too much.

It's really bad when you get on the same cycle as them.

Not necessarily true. When I was in college and lived with girls, one of them would always treat me to Dairy Queen once a month when she was on her rag icon_razz.gif

Mentioning it might increase more people in some ways. More women may be willing to be a roommate knowing that you are gay. But be careful of gay men who may think you are looking for a fuck-buddy.

More or less this. When I was looking for a place to live I was explicit that I would prefer to live with a woman. Simply makes things easier. I didn't say I was gay in the craigslist ad, but for me I did not need to. I wouldn't move into a place until I skyped with the person and got an idea of what they were like. I could tell very quickly that my current roommate would be totally cool with it and I was right (turned out she was hoping and praying for a gay roommate so she got her wish, ha).

Just be mindful that you may attract other gay guys to room with, and see if you would be ok with that. I personally wouldn't. There will always be a risk of trouble with that.
