So to the people who don't know I am a cashier manager at my local Wal-Mart. I've worked there for nearly two years now and run many departments. Last week I filling in for one of my friends at the service desk. One of my best friends in the world works with me and he is gay.

It's pretty obvious from his body language to the way he speaks that he is gay and "fem" acting, but customers automatically assume he is a lesser person because of it.

Anyway, this kind middle-age lady comes up the service desk to return something. My friend handles her order, is very polite, and she is polite back. When the order is done my friend goes on his break and the lady turns to me.
"I just can't stand gay people." She said.

I nearly lost it. Is this lady really saying that? She doesn't know I'm gay either (nor does anyone) but to say that about one of my good friends? It's going down.

    Me: Why?
Her: "It's such a sin. The Bible says so."
Me: *kinda laughing* To be fair ma'am your Bible also says eating pork, round haircuts, polyester, tattoos, and other things are just as much of a sin and it's all supposed to be measured equal. I think I read that in the same section. (I'm Atheist by the way lolz).
Her: "I suppose you're right but I don't have to agree with it and I know for sure my lord and savior doesn't."
Me: Well Jesus had two dads and I heard he's doing alright.

Then I stormed off, just like that. I suddenly felt like I made the biggest mistake ever. I could lose my job if this lady complains. It turns out she didn't and she comes into work acting just as nice as ever.

Anyway, I know it's nothing special but I thought at least some people would appreciate it.

LOL! I'm sure she really would have freaked out then. I always try to put things into perspective for people like that and "kill em with kindness." Sometimes it doesn't always work though...

Thanks! I remember reading that on the internet a while back!

I love how she gets to pick and choose the parts of the bible that the good lord really meant to be taken seriously. What a crock. Good for you to stand up to her prejudice.

I guess it is possible you could have lost your job, but I honestly don't see how. I think the better way to have handled it as a manager (without arguing the Bible) would be:

Her: "I just can't stand gay people."

You: "Madam, he and I are only coworkers. I am not aware of his sexual proclivities as he and I do not discuss such things. What I do know is that he is a competent employee and hard worker, which is all Wal-Mart requires of him. I find no reason to hate him. If you have a complaint with the service you received that's a different matter and I will be happy to address it. Thank you and have a great day."

This approach should show her that Wal-Mart does not distinguish between its straight or gay employees and that Wal-Mart hires based on competency without consideration of someone's perceived sexual orientation -- that Wal-Mart doesn't hate gays.

    Bravo! Cheers! Well Done!
She didn't say anything... spare no mind to what an older lady says to you in public, it's what she discusses in private that really shows her character. Cause it's in private a women of her day would speak her mind. I grew up surrounded by that kind of old world thinking, and you got to be patient, steadfast, and intelligent with Ladies of her caliber. She may not say what she thinks about things out loud to the public, but sometimes they discuss things on their own that just make your neck hairs stand on end! If you can make a positive impression on enough of the old class, hopefully maybe talking amongst themselves they'll conclude we're not all that bad.

TL;DR/TS;DU?: My experience with some old people is that they're more understanding when you come to them with consideration and understanding of them. So work it.

While I applaud his wanting to defend his friend, the problem is is that he, at work, is representing Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart may not like his schooling a customer on what the Bible does and does not teach (that is not what he was hired to do) and may very well fire him had the woman complained. (I'm taking back my earlier statement about his not losing his job.)

Josh, if you need your job, you may want to take the approach I suggested above.

Josh, I'm not surprised at your customer's insensitive comment. After all, you do live in the silver polished buckle of the Bible Belt.

I think your comeback line was perfect and that Bible Thumpin' Baptist Bitch thought nothing of what she said, which was really the "greater sin."

Southern Jesus Freaks think they are so effin perfect and their higher power smiles on them 24/7 because of being "saved." Growing up in the deep south, I saw this endlessly.

the two dads remark would not have made an impact because as a Christian she understands that Jesus has a heavenly father (as does she) and an earthly father (who was not Jesus' biological father). She also knows that Mary is Jesus' biological mother (he was born of the virgin Mary), so for her it wasn't as if Jesus was being raised by two gay dads as inferred by the comment. But it could have angered her enough to the point she would have complained to his supervisor and got him fired. When you're in managemnent and you're depending on someone else to pay your salary, you have to treat these situations with a bit more finess while getting your point across.

I dare say that could have been dealt more efficiently by defending your co-worker based on his merit rather than insulting her.

That the first employee's manner bothered the woman, a customer, seems to have been missed here. If we can sy that Wal Mart may not have wished the lady to be treated to a discussion of the Bible, we may also imagine that Wal Mart does not care for its employees to be getting the customers riled up,

Does Wal Mart sell wrist starch?

What you are missing is that from what was described, the first employee did nothing to rile the customer other than be who he is. If the customer is offended by an effeminate male, or limp wrists, or whatever other mannerisms she perceives as gay markers, thats HER problem. Her local Wal-Mart isn't the only place she's going to run into gay people. If she has such a problem with gay people she should just wall herself up in her home and never come out.

I agree that the second employee (OP) should not have entered into a Bible study with the customer who would have had every right to be riled with him and complain to his supervisor. Luckily for him she didn't. There was a more diplomatic way of handling the situation (refer to my previous post).
