When your muscles are sore, i heard that its not safe to use mental heat/cold things cause it can destroy the tissue, is this true?

no ice etc is used to reduce the inflammation in the area....whereas heat products such as deep heat are used to promote inflammation...using ice products wont damage the tissues it will only slow down inflammation

I like biofreeze. We used it in college in conjuction with ultrasound to promote pain relief. That active ingredient in most of these heating rubs is capsaicin--the same chemical that gives peppers thier heat. What most of these do is cause an irritation on the surface of the skin and that interferes with the pain signal from the muscle. The inflammation that occurs is due to this irriation and is what warms up the muscle, not the cream itself. There is no harm using them, unless it gives you a false sense of security and you over-exert yourself, causing injury.
