Which "gay social networking/dating/hookup" app do you like?

Which suits your particular demographic/flavour of gay?

    My findings follow below

Grindr: Mostly 18-32 athletic/in shape guys. Some attitude, a lot of douchebaggery, and the admins are generally very anti-lulzy. The public photo restrictions are beginning to approach Puritan levels, as opposed to the golden days shortly after its launch where tugged-down-jockstrap shots and clearly visible outlines of cocks in overly tight jeans shots were common, and positional preference and dick sizes were clearly posted for all to see. Nowadays, the zealous admins parse things as innocuous as "NSFW" and "Ate.5in T0p" as scandalous, b&-able offenses guaranteed to make Her Majesty the Queen blush. (Anecdotal: the 8.5" reference got me a warning that I had better keep my wording "something that my mother would not be embarrassed of", lest I suffer the wrath of the b&.

On the other hand, you can send lots of n00dz and talk as slutty as you know how in private texts if that's your thing.

Jack'D: Mostly 25-45 average shape (some athletic, some really out of shape). Generally very little attitude/douchiness, more risqué public photos and profile text allowed. Admins will b& fuckheads, but seem not to be as b&hammer-happy as Grindr admins. I've seen some b&-able main profile pics and nasty-ass text persist for a while without being moderated. The downer is you only get three "public" photos and two adult photos which can be unlocked; you cannot send any photos via inter-user mails.

Scruff: Mostly bears, many of whom are muscled and under 40. Haven't had a profile there long enough to get a sense of the climate, but seems relatively un-douchey. My (limited) impression is the admins are a bit relaxed in enforcing Apple's G-rated standards, but haven't really seen anything egregiously "offensive" (yet) either.

Recon: Specific focus on BDSM/fetish community. Wider range of ages and body types. Some guys will observe leatherman and D/s protocol (or might ignore you or flame you if you do not observe a "low protocol" at the very least). As the focus is on fetish and gear, most of the profiles and photos are not overtly sexual in terms of showing skin.

Growlr: Haven't tried this. I've heard it is geared toward 30+ "Big Bears" and chubs/chub chasers mostly.

I think I've more or less outgrown Grindr (though it still has the biggest market share as a hookup/"supposd platonic buddy finder" proximity app), and seem to be liking Jack'D and Recon.

Those are pretty accurate, with regional variations I suppose. Locally Grindr is full of young pretty boys looking to talk or for friends (even at 3am?) many with BFs. Jack'd is all young and almost all asian. Growlr and Scruff are pretty much as you called them, least douchy and pretentious with Scruff generally being the better one. I wasn't aware of Recon.
Of course living in a smaller area it is all the same guys on most of them and the online sites as well.

Yikes. That's a whole lot of gay-dating apps. I don't know why all these apps surprise me but they do.

I have Grindr, Scruff and Recon. Recon is the one I use most (although not the phone app, it crashes all the time) as the guys on there are into the sex I'm into. Grindr and Scruff are largely interchangeable here in Melbourne; most guys are on both, although Grindr has a few more twinks than Scruff does. Oddly, for a while I was getting more action off Grindr than Scruff.

I tried a picture of me in Speedos in Grindr, and that was not accepted. I think they are being needlessly ideological in how people express themselves. Whatever.

The grindr censors are hypersensitive to any profile statement that pokes fun at grindr. It's kind of fun running experiments to vary the degrees of subtlety and see if you can get something by them. So far I haven't succeeded.

The jack'd people let everything thru, bless their hearts.

Yeah and what we really need is an App to manage all those apps at once.

given that u have all three apps where you see the same guy, would that make you one of the desperate ones and therefore is a warning sign against you? icon_lol.gif

My god, this is like comparing nightclubs in a city's gay village, but it's online and completely virtual and you don't know who the hell you're talking to because they're not in front of you. Is that what our community has been reduced to? And more importantly, is this how people are meeting each other more and more in this day and age?

Where was the promise of technology to make our world better? Where's my fucking jetpack? It's like we went into the future and all I got was this lousy internet, where I can see all kind of amazing pictures and information about cities I'd love to visit and people I'd love to meet, but can't actually see these places or meet these people. What a horrible time we live in.

Sorry I didn't meant to get preachy, this was a very thoughtful analysis of all the gay social networking apps. No sarcasm here. I'm on Grindr but I just use it to see who the hell is gay in my neighbourhood (which I found out I don't need an app for).

So you are speaking hypothetically - that is, if you had a smart phone AND you happened to have three or more hookup apps, AND you just happened to see the same guy on those three or more apps...

... then you'd totally judge him as a loser who is desperate?

... or if (being the sensible guy you seem to be, natch) you were watching over the shoulder of your {select one or more: friend/partner/random guy} using his iDevice shuffling through his three or more apps (on each of which, of course he has a profile...)

... you'd totally judge him to be a complete slutty ho-bag, right?

    Complicated, but consistent.

I especially like the Jack'D one because it gives you data about your taste in men. Very eye opening stuff.
