Normally whenever I run I do a couple stretches before and after I run, both the same kinds but it's the same ones that I do before lifting weights and well I think I should be doing different ones for running because while running my legs, shins and ankles sometimes hurt a lot for a little while at the start.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Do a warm up first, walking, very gentle jogging, etc., then try these dynamic stretches before a run: walking lunge, squats, leg swings, and high knees.

After the run do a cool down, then passive stretches: hamstring stretch, hip stretch, calf stretch, and glute stretch.

    I hope that helps.

I never stretch before I after. I have done it in the past and I have never observed much of a difference

I don't think the pain or soreness is coming from you not stretching. You may actually be running incorrectly for your body...I've been guilty of it too. Film yourself running, either on your own or at a store where they do it to fit you for sneaks and see how you land on your foot, and make sure you are never striking your heel to the ground whether sprinting or even at a slow jog. That is hell on your body.

    Run on!

I don't "stretch" either. Pretty much what Lincsbear posted. I just do a few body weight squats. Toe hops to warm up the calves. Run in place. Butt kickers. Basically anything to get blood pumping through the leg muscles.

I read not to really stretch before, just start the run a bit slower and ease into it. Stretching hard at the onset can shock your muscles. I stretch a lot after. I sit down and do hurdle stretches, butterfly one for my groin, and standing- cross my feet and bend forward toward my toes- this gets everything.
