Does anyone know how to get rid of a hickey/bite mark? Even though it’s fading I still have noticeable dark purple marks on my neck. They look like bruises. Someone told me applying toothpaste and letting sit on the area for half and hour would help decrease the appearance. Can anyone help?

Not the most fashionable option, but a nice try all the same.

Why dont you try icing it down? If that doesnt work, apply a hot towel...

OW... I had thought that was a man until I saw her breasts... Wait, maybe she/he is a inbetween..? Poor thing...

I think hickey is a hematoma, dead red blood cells remaining from small internal bleeding of damaged capillaries... Therefore I dont think there is a good way to remove it (I could be wrong). I suppose you can try to increase circulation of the area with gentle massage for your circulatory system to pick up the debris...? I highly doubt toothpate will do anything here...

Once I got a hickey the night before an important meeting with a professor... I turned to a friend's concealer.

Yeah, it pretty much is a hematoma, but it will go away with time. I remember the first time I gave someone a hickey :)
OW's response it what came to my mind. Now that's not the style I'd recommend -- maybe not something red and knitted? -- and not sure about the person wearing that it, but that gets the point across well.

    Honesly OW, couldn't comment.

And, no NYCmuscle, sometimes I feel there is very little I can make go away except the patient -- that is at my meanest and most cynical. There are of course many triumphs, but not sure they make up for the times when just a little time works wonders.

"I got a hickey on my dick once. It scared people."

Are you sure it was the hickey that scared people? Or the fact you were waving your penis at defenseless people?

j/k. Sorry, I couldn't pass that up OW. I'm sure it's very nice.

NYCMusc4Musc may have been onto something. I was told that rubbing them like you'd rub a spot on your neck that hurts might help get rid of it. NO clue if it works, but I've heard it more than once.

Actually the rubbing to rid of pain is not quite the same... It is simliar to the effects of TENS treatment for pain relief. TENS = Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation. This is the machine they put on you with a mild current to reduce pain when you go seey our physical therapist...

There are 2 theories to how TENS works: Gate theory and endorphine release theory.

Gate theory is describing the current acting as a stimulant that blocks the dorsal horn neural pathway, and simultaneously activats a central inhibitory system, which "fools" your brain from feeling the pain.

Endorphone theory is postulating that the electrical current releases natural opiods in your body, which is a powerful pain killer. But this theory is proven more and more to be unreliable..

Rubbing yourself to reduce pain is supposedly acting on the Gate theory described above. It has nothing to do with circulation (actually with an acute injuryyou do not want to rub on it as it exacerbates inflammatory response and sweling.)

Go to your local Health Food Store/Whole Foods/Wild Oats, etc. Buy ARNICA gel and Arnica Montana tablets.

Six tablets under your tongue 3x per day (read directions just to make sure) and rub the gel on the bruise 2 or 3 times a day.

Arnica helps your body re-absorb the blood.

And no, never a hickey, but a plastic surgeon with slippery fingers!
