Is it in the men? What about the straight ones?
Is it in the water? Does a city have to have a beach to be "gay"?
Is it in the food? Does a gay city have to have fabulous restaurants?

What are your criteria for a "gay" city?

I don't know how to explain it, but I sure know it when I see it.

If I were to use NYC and SF as examples of "gay cities":
-Where a gay man can walk down the street and feel free to visually 'cruise' (and get 'cruised') in a respectful way without getting beaten up. Also holding hands in the street/subway without fear or hesitation.
-See that lots of stores/services represent themselves as "gay friendly" (often with a rainbow flag sticker in the window).
-Gay related stores (bookstores, porn, clothing, accessories, supplies, bars).

Even so, I assume that in reality an entire city could never be considered gay, just some extensive area(s) of it. There will always be haters who disapprove and will exercise their feelings.

How to determine the fabulocity is easy... You only have to measure how great it is against something truly fabulous, for example Judy Garland.

For instance take Toronto,, do you think Judy would like it.. I don't think so, she'd tell the audience that during a show but you know she'd just say it to be nice..

Then take San Fran... everyone would agree that the Judy would find that city fabulous, no bones about it.

She'd probably find Vancouver, NYC and especially London fabulous because she was there and died and went to heaven.

Here are some cities. How "gay" are they?

    Sydney, NSW
    Sydney, NE
    Paris, FR
    Paris, TX

How gay is your city in relation to "San Francisco"?
How gay is your city in relation to "Kampala City"?

Well any major city can be gay but I think the thing that plays the obvious factor is whether or not its gay friendly

When the gay community has its own street to call their own - like Toronto: Church St. - how gay is that?

What kind of answer would you like - a critique of the political development in that city that resulted in a gay village or the superficial, flashy and trashy stuff that defines a gay village?

I'd say a city is "gay" if being gay in that city is completely unremarkable.

I want to live there! I hate standing out, cause other people are nothing but stand in; in their own lives now less!
