    hey hey!

I'm planning to fly up to San Francisco in july or august this summer. I'm thinking from thursday through sunday night.

Do you guys recommend any hotels in the Castro area/Market street area? Doesn't have to be a fancy hotel, i'm probably not gonna spend much time there other than sleep (well...maybe sexing too, but...minor details, LOL).

    Any help is appreciated!

Get a ticket. Go there. Rent a car. Drive around and find the places you wanna hang out. Drive around and find a nearby hotel (preferably walking distance from bars/clubs if you plan to drink).

Well, that's how I like to vacation. icon_biggrin.gif

Use ORBITZ.com or Hotels.com to find a hotel for the days that you will be there. This is going to be peak tourist season. I recommend trying to find a hotel South of Market in the Union Square area, or as close to Market St. as possible. Be sure to check out the ratings. Some of the hotels can be quite old and not very well kept. Then get a MUNI pass for 3 or 4 days that gives you unlimited use of the buses and Muni. Different from the Metro, it goes underground up and down Market St. out to Castro street, among other places. There is also the historic street cars that go up and down Market St. These take forever, though. Use the underground MUNI. And you can take buses or MUNI to all the tourist places.

Ride METRO from the airport. It is cheap and will take you right down town, along Market St.. If you rent a car, you will probably have to spend $20-$30 per night for parking. I suggest you DON'T rent a car. Learn to use the Metro and MUNI to get around. If you have to, you can take a cab, occassionally.

I have stayed at various hotels north and south of Market ( 2 to 4 or 5 blocks)near Union Sq. Also I have stayed at Americas Best Value Inn SOMA. It is very basic, but was acceptable. But is way down near Folsom St. so some walking back up to Market.

Once again, this is peak tourist season and the days you have chosen are the most expensive for hotels.

    Good luck! Have fun.

    BRING WARM CLOTHING.

Take BART or a DOOR to DOOR Van from SFO. Bart is 8$, D2D is 20$ with tip.

Dont rent a car. MUNI works well and you can walk around. If you rent a car, leave SF and drive to the Marin Headlands across the GG bridge.

Happy Hour at BlackBird on Friday Evening.

Farmers Market at the Ferry Building on Saturday.

REBEL on Saturday night, I hear.

If its a nice day, Afternoon in Dolores Park.

Visit the De Young Viewing Tower in GG park. (Free).

Take Muni to TWIN PEAKS. Or a Cab.

LOL, thanks for the responses guys! It has been several years since i've been in the Bay Area, and even then, i stayed at a friend's in San Jose.

i'm definitely gonna walk/take BART....i remember parking up there is a bitch, so, i'm not gonna bother with a rental.

I will do searches on what you guys recommended, and i'll update as i go along so ya'll can help me out icon_smile.gif

The last Sunday in July is the Dore Alley Street fair (leather).
I definitely recommend that you check it out.
But, be advised to book your hotel reservation ASAP.
OR, if you aren't interested in the street fair, you probably will want to be here some other weekend.

Beck's Motor Lodge, on Market, near Castro
Convenient access to all public transit...

I stayed at the willows inn in 2008, fairly basic but right on the edge of the ghetto. It's on 14th street at the intersection of market and church streets.

Not in Castro, but off of Union Square walk-able to Powell BART is the Hotel Mark Twain. There's a great breakfast place downstairs called Taylor Street Cafe.
