Best place to go in Europe

  • Apr 24, 2012 5:35 AM GMT
Hey guys, so I just found out some awesome news....for my birthday my parents are paying for me to go to Ghana in December for a 10 days to visit my brother who is volunteering there. So I'll fly into Ghana during early December and will need to leave sometime between the 14th-18th. However, on the way home I'm hoping to plan a 5-6 day layover somewhere in Europe. Any recommendations? I really want to go somewhere that'll be safe, be relatively easy to figure my way around and that will be a good time! If forced to choose between history/museums and scenery I'd opt for scenery. Right now I've looked into flights and virtually anywhere in Europe I'd be able to plan a 5-6 day layover for less than $150 extra so anywhere in Europe is fair game. Any suggestions of places/countries I should visit? Right now my very early top 3 places I'm interested in hitting up are Portugal, Amsterdam and Switzerland.

Amsterdam is nice, but I prefer Paris or Barcelona. You should consider those ;p Goodluck!

    BARCELONA

its the most fun city in Europe, you've got beaches, hot guys, history, sights, architecture, art, great food, late nights, all in a very safe and walkable city. you can get by with english in the main downtown areas, but there will be some people who only speak spanish/castellano.

    BERLIN
fucking cool. ok, no beaches but tons of history, lots of fun, cool music scene, cool art scene, lots of late night parties, gay friendly and you can get by with english only.

    AMSTERDAM

ok, no beaches and the food scene isn't great but you'll have fun. lots of late night parties, great music scene, history, sights, very gay friendly, its a safe and walkable city. every weekend its overrun with young people from all over europe. everyone speaks english.

Why does everybody like Amsterdam so much? Ok, I probably shouldnt speak since I lived in the Amsterdam urban are for about 12 years and I think its cool, but I certainly would not ever put it on top of the list.. must be bias of familiarity or something

Although I live in Spain, I agree with the above. Lisboa is a fun city and you can take a side trip to Sintra. Sintra is like a fairy tale castle and while you are there visit the Capuchin Monastery close by. It is carved completely out of the side of the mountain. You can do Sintra in a day trip and the scenery around it is very beautiful with views over the forested mountains and to the Atlantic. The rest of the time you can easily spend seeing the sights in an around the old town center. The people are very friendly all around Portugal.

If you want to visit Spain, then you might want to consider Malaga because there is a lot of incredible scenery here and if you want I can show you around. Not a pick up line dude, I am married. Any where in Europe is worth the stop over. Good luck and have fun!

When I went to Germany, Amsterdam was the least expensive airport to fly into.

    Have fun.

Paris is fabulous, like Rome, it's like visiting a big outdoors museum.

Barcelona has some great bars and clubs, but a bit too cold for laying on a beach in December.

Berlin is interesting, a bit industrial, but has some great fetish clubs.

Ireland has some lovely scenery, but you'd need to drive.

Amsterdam is overrated, easy to get around though and can be seen in a day.

    Switzerland is very beautiful.

I'd hit London and then take the Eurostar train to Paris and then Bruxells. Avoid flying as it's a hassle for such short journeys and you'll see more by train (and it's cheaper). If you must go to Amsterdam, you can get there easily by train too.

    Have fun

I've done a little bit of research, has anyone toured around Eastern Europe? Sounds like it's cheaper than Western Europe and is really scenic. Any suggestions about great countries for a solo traveler to tour around in Eastern Europe?

I lived in Prague for a year--it is relatively affordable and absolutely stunning. Definitely more of a cultural scene, though, vs. outdoor activities (unless you count walking up hilly cobblestone streets icon_wink.gif

Other, less popular but equall gorgeous places: Slovenia (the capital, Ljubljana, is like a mini, less-touristy Prague, and there are some great towns on the coast) and Croatia, especially Dubrovnik--just amazing.

Good luck picking a spot--eastern Europe rocks!
