I think I'm finally ready

I've been holding this off for some time, but I think I'm finally ready to tell one of my best friend that I'm gay. I've only told two people so far, my cousin and one of my other good friend. Both of them happen to be female, which definitely eased up the tension. But this will be the first time ever where I'm telling one of my guy friends, so this will be harder. I already know that he's pretty cool with gays since he has a couple of gay friends, but still this is a little nerve-racking. Most of my friends are guys, so I'm hoping that this will be a smooth first step to get me more comfortable.

It's funny, cause this is something I would never imagine me doing. I was seriously planning on just staying in the closet for as long as I live. But transferring to a new college and meeting all these people that are so open-minded about homosexuality definitely changed my mind.

As for my parents, I think I'm still gonna wait for a while, at least until I graduate and start making decent money. I come from a traditional Asian family, and homosexuality isn't really something that's accepted in the older Asian community. A lot of pressure is put on the first son to be successful, career-wise and family-wise. I'm expected to get married and carry the family name to the next generation. Family is the number one most important thing for Asians, which is why marriage is such a high priority. I constantly get hammered with questions from my parents about why I don't have a girlfriend yet and it gets very annoying.

The whole idea is a little strange from a western point of view, but for all you Asians out there, you know what I'm talking about. While I'm not ready yet to come out to my family, I think I'm comfortable enough to come out to more of my friends at least.

I know this place probably gets hundreds of 'coming out' threads every week and it gets a little tiring, but it helped to get all that off my chest either way. Thanks for reading for those who did.

    Stop. Right. There.

In my experience (been 'out' since 1991), females are much less accepting than guys.

If you can come out to girls, you'll have no problem coming out to guys. Just tell'm you swallow and your best friend will become your best friend with benefits.

Just updating... so I told my friend and he was really cool with it. He told me to take my time coming out to other people and that he'll be supportive of me. It wasn't that bad for me to tell him mostly because I already knew he was pretty cool with it. But I don't know that for my other friends, and that's the scary part, jumping into the unknown.

I hope it goes just as well for them. Thanks everyone!

Well you now know he is a true friend.

Anyone who wont accept you for who you are, doesn't get that title.
