hey. for what it's worth.

i used to live upstate near patterson, ny.

the Appalachian Trail crosses the Metro-north harlem valley line. the train stops off at the A-T 'station' saturday, sunday and holidays.

it's good for day hikes, at intervals there are smallish campsites (first come, first serve) and the train ride out and back is pretty scenic.

hope that helps

I think the question would be; how far will u travel to get there?
Will u be on train or maybe renting a zip car?

Camping in the woods or do u mean campgrounds where u can rent the kayaks and equipment u might need?

The areas outside of New Paltz are nice and not too far from NYC.

Hidden Valley Lake is a campground near New Paltz - about 20 mins away.

There are one or two campgrounds on the North Fork of LI if you wanna hit the wine trails.

Clarence Fahnestock State Park is up around Cold Spring and its pretty cool.

North South Lake in the Catskills

Camping around the Delaware Water Gap area is nice too.

Good luck!
