Do you need to take the metal mixing ball out first, if the water-protein mix can be drunk later?

It can be... but make sure you shake it again. I don't think they really intend it to keep for very long, especially if it has any kind of milk product in it.

I pre-mix my shakes and take them with me in the truck at work- they've sat for a couple of hours and I just shake them up and they're fine. I don't think you'd want them unrefrigerated for longer than that though.

Yeah, it's more to do with taste than any breakdown of the protein mix. I make mine at home in the morning and put it in a small thermos cup to keep it cool and throw in a couple of ice cubes for good measure.

I workout during my lunch but don't really have a place to mix-up a fresh shake and keeping it in a fridge at work is perfect.
