So this past weekend I did a real hard 56 mile bike ride up the coast of Rhode Island. I bike a pretty good amount, but while climbing the hills, I felt the little tingle in my big toe nails and now, 5 days later, they are turning dark and they are sore as all heck. This has never happened before.

They are going to fall off, aren’t they!? lol I have been soaking them in a water/peroxide mixture and keeping them dry and exposed to air as much as possible. I’m also using an anti-fungal cream for good measure. I have no athlete's foot or anything else but one site suggested the cream.

Anyone ever lose a toe nail? Anyone ever save one? I am interested in your thoughts guys.

How about you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist?

Just a suggestion.

I love it when Caslon shows us his cat collection.

To Original714:

Yes, you're going to most likely lose your toenails. I'm surprised that you are going to lose them after just hours on the bike. Once I lost 3 toenails years ago when I did an ancient pilgrimage in Spain. It took walking on my feet for nearly 3 weeks until they started to go black. They eventually fall off and then your toe digits look like that of a frog's. Very pleasant. How amphibious you'll look, my dear. Ribbit!

They'll grow back. Doing all the anti-fungal treatment stuff really isn't necessary but keeping your feet dry is a good idea. Best to not wear shoes whenever possible. Wear sandals (with socks to hide your Kermit toes, he hehee!) whenever possible.

Good luck.

Dude chill out. It'll grow back. I lost one this winter from a ski boot and it looks fine now.

lol, you guys crack me up. I’m definitely chill about it but wanted outside input. I lost pinky toe nails after a 28 mile hike in November, it was amusing.

I'll gladly post a pic, weak and weary beware (ahem, Caslon, lol), but I don’t know how to post a pic from my desktop? I can do it when it is on another website, is the process the same?

Use an image upload site like Photobucket. Just check out www.photobucket.com, make an account, and it's super easy from there.

Though why I'm telling you this is beyond me. Gross toenail... not something I really wanna see right now.

I lost a toenail after wearing a pair of bad fitting ski boots last winter. Like you I was concerned (it looked really bad / funky). My doctor took one look at it and said "it will just fall off and another one will replace it" sure enough it did.. but it took 4 months or so. In my case it looked a lot worse than it was.

You may want to go to your doctor just to have them take a quick look to make sure that everything is OK.

I lost my toe nail the last marathon I was training for. It is not a good looking process but don't worry, it will grow back.

I lost my big toe nail when I accidently pulled a 2-drawer file cabinet into it. Of course, I wasn't wearing shoes. It wouldn't stop bleeding. So off to the doctor I went.

I knew the damn thing was going to hurt. So I'm laying there on the chair in the doctor's office and he shoots the toe up with novacaine. I'm sitting there, grinding my teeth, eyes closed. Then the doctor's says that we're all done. The 'funny guy' got a big kick out of watching me squirm needlessly.

Anyway, Original714, get your butt to a doctor. It will take a few months to grow back, but you'll live. Not giving it proper medical attention could prevent that.

Your toe, and possibly your whole foot could be next

I was going to suggest to use those nails and grate them over a salad like cheese to get that extra cheesy yet crunchy texture to your salad.

Your toenail may stay on but remain black if a small section of it is not damaged. The other nail will start growing underneath, until it's proud enough to break out on its own.

Years ago this happened to me repeatedly because I was wearing shoes a 1/2 size small. Could never get the entire stupid thing to fall off, so I just painted all the rest of my nails black!

Yes. But it will get really loose and wabbly, and like your kiddie-teeth you'll end up pulling it off, instead of it "falling off".

;^)

Sorry.

I lost one a couple weeks ago. It was the sad aftermath of running into the leg of a bar stool during and semiconscious nocturnal feeding frenzy. It feels very weird even as it is growing back.

And no, I didn't save it. It came off in pieces.

RBY71, you're right! It does feel weird growing back, I thought mine would grow in nice and smooth but it was scaly and bumpy at first.

Yeah, it feels weirdest when I'm barefoot or wearing flip flops. It's sort of like a numbness, but not really. Could it be phantom-nail effect?

That happen to me four times... You want to see a picture of my broken toe nail? It's so gross... I remember I accident drop my 25 lbs dumb-bell on the ground and hit my toe. Yes it was so painful and I was yelling and everybody was looking at me like this

Just one time was dumbbell and the other three was something else. 1. dumbbell, 2. accident hit the couch because my toe nail was long, 3. i used to walk a lot with my black shoes and burn my toe and it creaked open, 4. I was playing with my dad's long heavy digging bar and accident hit my toe.

Oh okay, I am glad it only happened once. If you kept smashing your toes in the same manner I would be concerned for your ability to function like a normal person who readily learns and puts in the necessary effort to avoid making the same grave errors more than once.

One time, a screen door slammed shut on my big toe and ripped the toenail half off... I finally cut it off all the way after a few hours of serious pain.

The weird thing was the skin underneath... it got hard and actually transformed into a new toenail.
