I got fat on a diet that was largely based on whole grains and beans (i.e., carbs up the wazoo), and I lost 30 pounds in 5 months by switching to a more paleo-style diet. It also made my wonky blood sugar issues go away, so I'm completely sold on a reduced carb diet. Most important thing for losing weight, though, is caloric deficit, even on a low-carb diet. Ya gotta burn more calories than ya eat.

You need carbs to function and workout. Be that cardio or weights, you'll feel sluggish without them.

A balanced diet is best, just don't consume more than you need. Just that simple my friends.

Carbs worked for me for a while, but I've found that counting calories is not only easier, but lasting longer. If you do go back to low carbs, don't expect too much energy during workouts, and switch to low calories after you shed a bulk, because low-carb just doesn't stick with a healthy and active lifestyle.
