fitartistsf saidAccording to the rules and regulations of the day, Titanic actually DID have enough lifeboats on board, in fact, she had 4 more than was required... It was the fact that the boats could hold up to 70 people, and almost all left the ship with no more than approximately 30 to 35, that there was so much loss of life...

That's only partially true. Even if they were packed with 70 people, there still would have been a huge loss of life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Titanic#Lifeboats

That's very true... I never said ALL the passengers would be saved... but they had the required amount of boats for the time... Titanic's sheer size in 1912, outstripped the size and requirements of the regulations written in the 1880s/90s, when it was believed that no ships would ever get to be as large as the Olympic Class vessels eventually did... and remember, with the new system of watertight compartments, not counting the PR hype about her being VIRTUALLY unsinkable, it was believed Titanic would be her own lifeboat...

No I hear ya - was just pointing out the way you phrased it implied that the under-capacity of each departing lifeboat was why there was so much loss of life. It was their bonehead decisions not to put in ENOUGH lifeboats (when it was built for enough) on that contributed to the large loss of life.

I agree, a lot of cruise ships these days have no class to them, the Cunard ships are the only real "ocean liners" left.

Clive Palmer is one of those nutcase guys who, if he didn't have a few billion dollars in the bank, would be certifiable. He's providing quite alot of fodder for the media back here...

I'm sure that a new ship would be much safer now than it was then...but there is a psychological factor that gives me pause to think this is a good idea. People going on expensive vacations, they are usually going to have a good time. Having a ship named after one that thousands of people were killed in is a downer...to say the least. With all of the other ships out there, why would people choose one with that name today?

It might be fun to encourage everyone to dress during the time period of the original titanic.

As an Australian, I am not surprised that obese Clive would want to build something like this. He is full of crackpot ideas, he accused the CIA of funding the Australian Greens.
He is trying to get endorsment to stand for election against the Australian Treasurer, because he and two other billionaires do not want to pay a resources tax on the iron ore they are ripping out of Australia.
He had a "blue" (an aussie term for fight) with the national leadership of his football team (all nice young men!!) and now they are not represented. Lastly, why are we obsessed witht the Titanic, there were worse losses of life on bigger ships than it?

Will this have a gay romance in the story if it sinks; or is Titanic 2 going to be the first of it's kind, Spaceship?

You saw that Futurama episode?

http://futurama.wikia.com/wiki/Titanic

The Titanic was the largest space cruiser ever built. It was a luxury ship that had a range of lower class to first class accommodation. It was supposed to keep a steady course but, as usual, Zapp Brannigan caused its destruction during its maiden voyage on which he was captain. He changed its course, first causing it to fly through a comet field, then an area with a black hole because he has a "sense of adventure". The black hole completely destroyed the ship, which was slightly similar to the sinking of the real twentieth century ship R.M.S TITANIC, with it breaking in half. However, there were enough escape pods to evacuate everybody on board but one, the robot Countess dе la Roca because she was too heavy.

this truth goes MUCH further than simple appointments and appearances. An Ocean Liner and a "Cruise Ship" are two completely different designs from the bottom of the bilge to the top of the castle. An ocean liner is designed first and foremost to operate, you guessed it, in the open OCEAN. That brings a special set of specs to the drawing table. It has to be able to deal with an operating environment that has the potential to go from blue skies and balmy breezes to a raging maelstrom in the blink of an eye (figuratively speaking). Her hull must be tested to much greater tolerances and her bow designed to pierce towering waves should she be caught in a storm and while the primary hull must reach high enough above water to protect her from dangers, she must also have a low center of gravity to lend greater stability and resistance to capsizing as well a slim, efficient profile so that she may slip speedily through the water (ocean liners are still considered transportation)

A cruise ship is a relatively flimsy vessel by comparison, tall and boxy with a high center of gravity. Designed to operate in a relatively safe environ (or close enough to one that she may seek safe harbor should the need arise) and more concerned with feeding the never-ceasing party atmosphere aboard than be serious about plying the waters. Of course they are designed to take a beating should it absolutely be necessary but their ultimate design mantra is to entertain as many passengers as possible.

The easiest way to compare the two, I read somewhere, is that a cruise ship is basically a hull that is built around a hotel (think of a land-based hotel and then make it float) whereas an ocean liner is a hull that happens to have a hotel fitted into it.

Honestly, I'm wary of anything made in China. To be fair, their DESIGNS are amazing. Just look at some of the new office blocks going up over there. But building codes are supposedly still sketchy over there. I'll give it a few years before taking a spin 'round the world aboard Titanic II
