Where would you like to be near?

For what it's worth, the last time I was at SF I stayed at the Grosvenor Suites in Nob Hill.

    pros; cheap. clean large rooms.

cons; not near the castro, and while the subways are within walking distance, you will walk hills to/fro to get to them.

    Becks Motor Lodge
Great Location in Castro. Close to transportation and Castro night life and restaurants. Rates are pretty good for SF. Clean Moderate to Average Hotel. Can be cruisy sometimes to, if others staying there are into it. Has free parking if your going to rent a car, otherwise transportation right out the door.

I'd stay away from San Francisco. Either Portland or Seattle would be my choice.

The only time i got to choose my hotel, i stayed at the vintage court executive hotel. Not bad, close-ish to union square, nice distance to bart, bus, trolley cars, shopping, china town. Kind of depends on what your looking for.

One of my favorite hotels in SF is The Huntington, but it sounds like you're wanting something more fun and casual that that. How about the Phoenix? This is a cool hotel geared toward younger people and is in a place where you can get around easily. JFK Jr. once stayed there as a single guy. I know people who like this - although I've never stayed there myself. Check it out.
