"The idea that he is a devotee of reason seeing through the outdated superstitions believed by less intelligent beings is the foremost conceit of the atheist."

"These days atheism is, like the atheist's ultimate destination, hot indeed."

Vox Day, author of The Irrational Atheist

For starters, the idea that hell could in any way be pleasant is absurd. Claiming that a towering intellect like Albert Einstein was an atheist, is in hell, and that you'll enjoy fraternizing with him there, is typical atheist "cerebral snake oil."

There are many videos featuring people who say they have seen glimpses of hell. Their reports contain some very remarkable common elements. They are now Christians with a mission to help people avoid hell.

    (1) Former atheist professor gets a glimpse of hell and becomes a Christian evangelist.

    (2) Teenage girl shoots herself in despair, experiences heaven and hell and is now a devout Christian

    (3) Young South Korean artist experiences hell and describes, using words and paintings, what she saw.

    (4) Adrenaline junky, Mickey Robinson, "dies" in a plane crash, gets a glimpse of hell, and seeks to warn others.

I think the point is irrelevant. As far as I understand, the ground below us is nothing aside from molten metal and the Earth's inner core. Further still, the question of an afterlife is pointless because consciousness, being a function of the brain and able to be altered through processes and substances (anaesthesia) inclines me to believe that upon bodily death, the brain dies and conscious awareness and perception ceases. One likely cannot feel when one dies. It is black nothingness. No thoughts or feelings or any sensations at all. Like being unborn. Like dreamless sleep.

This is my guess as to what happens. But it's a free world, and other people have their guesses. We can only ever speculate the mystery of death and what it may bring.

The belief in such an ending as retribution from a life lived not in accordance to doing things just like some other groups of people is particularly silly if you ask me... They make a hell on earth for themselves of a humility that contradicts itself within it's pursuit, and make living harder for those who manage to be happy in the lives they got; cause they won't accept it as their way.
If there is a "heaven" awaiting us, I'd imagine The Creator would be responsible for who gets to live there, and not some screw ball lost in their own beliefs. I'd imagine some of the neighbors who hate me would be there... so if that were the outcome after death... why not give them quarter; despite disagreement now that I'm alive, and not wait for some outside entity to make right what I chose not to... If you Believe in anything... you've learned to Live, and if you're concerned about others as much as yourself, more than likely, you've learned to Live By The Universal Golden Rules. JPtheBITCH: You are one sad...jockfever. But, since you'll apparently buy anything, I have some prospectuses for securities I'd like you to take a look at. Tomorrow, your place, noonish?

jockfever: It's fitting that one so heavily invested in the crackpot superstitions of the Left would imagine himself competent to criticize belief in the Bible, the greatest book ever written.

"Nothing created Everything" and "I'm competent to judge anyone who says otherwise" sort of go together like atheism and mass murder.

Thinking that your worthless personal attacks are a substitute for facts, evidence and logic makes you a member in good standing of the disordered Left.

Really? Looks to me like pretty insufferable company for the most part.

Perhaps related side note: they used Janeane Garofalo's voice to torture people at Gitmo.

Scotticus: I think the point is irrelevant. As far as I understand, the ground below us is nothing aside from molten metal and the Earth's inner core.

jockfever: While some may say that hell is within the earth, most believers don't claim to know the location of hell. The Bible doesn't definitively say where it is. It could be located within the physical universe, or it could be part of a spiritual realm. For believers, the location is not important; not going there is important.

Scotticus: Further still, the question of an afterlife is pointless because consciousness, being a function of the brain and able to be altered through processes and substances (anaesthesia) inclines me to believe that upon bodily death, the brain dies and conscious awareness and perception ceases. One likely cannot feel when one dies. It is black nothingness. No thoughts or feelings or any sensations at all. Like being unborn. Like dreamless sleep.

jockfever: The soul by definition is supernatural and eternal. Physical, scientifically observable phenomena such as sleep, anesthesia, dementia, and other forms of brain damage do not affect the soul. As C. S. Lewis famously put it, “You don’t have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.”

Scotticus: This is my guess as to what happens. But it's a free world, and other people have their guesses. We can only ever speculate the mystery of death and what it may bring.

jockfever: Much depends on whether one accepts or rejects God, the Bible, and Christianity. If you believe in the Bible, then there is no doubt that God exists (that, of course, can be intuitively obvious even without the Bible). For believers, there is no doubt that there is a spiritual realm, along with souls, Heaven, hell, an afterlife, judgment, etc. Outside of the Bible, in my opinion, everything is irrelevant guesses.

Skeptics might consider why videos made by four very different people have such strikingly common elements (1) there is no time in the spiritual realm (2) hell is a place of torment and screaming, described as horrible, hideous, horrific, agony, and burning. (3) in the spiritual realm, consciousness is way elevated, i.e., "you know that you know that you know." (4) in the spiritual realm colors are more vivid, shapes are sharper, and emotions are more intense. Sensory perceptions are much stronger. (5) There is a heightened sense of awareness in the spiritual realm. Everything is more real. In fact, things are hyper-real. Compared to the spiritual realm, physical life on earth is like a semi-conscious dream-like state. (6) There are specialized areas in hell for different types of rejection of God. (7) Heaven is filled with light. Hell is filled with darkness.

Last but not least, all four of the people having out-of-body experiences have become much more spiritual. Three of them, especially the atheist, have become more Christian. Other videos and the book "Twenty Three Minutes in Hell" have many of the same common themes.

My idea of hell I took from school was more of just a place devoid of love. I imagine it is just a place for all those who failed to treat others with respect and dignity. No fire, just a wasteland with no law or order. Inhabitants will be those who never cared for others. Murderers, rapists, scum, and bitchy drag queens.

I was taught that loving god out of fear of His retributions was an imperfect love of god but was as good as any place to start. The ultimate end was to get to the point where you love god for he sake of loving god because He is loveable in His infinite goodness and love. So you are right

I was also taught that to speculate who is in Hell was a sin because in doing so you are judging and ultimately only god is our judge and only He knows who is there.

GigoloAssassin: It's gonna be a Huge party, I know it. SEE YOU GUYS THERE!!!!

jockfever: Iam McCormack was an atheist and avid surfer. One night he was stung by five deadly box jellyfish. He spent 15-20 minutes in the hospital morgue. When he awoke, two nurses ran in fear. Here's his version of party time in hell:

"People have this picture of hell, of party time and great enjoyment. I used to think that too. I thought that you would do all the things there that you're not supposed to do on Earth. That is absolute trash. The place I was in was the most frightening place I've ever been. The people there could not do anything that their wicked hearts wanted to do, they couldn't do anything. And there's no boasting. Who could you boast to down there? “Oh yeah, I raped, murdered, plundered, pillaged.” Well whoop-de-doo boy! There's nothing down there to talk about, nothing. And they know that judgment is coming.

"There is no relationship to time in that place. The people there can't tell what time it is. They can't tell whether they've been there ten minutes, ten years or 10,000 years. They had no relationship to time. It was a frightening place.

"The Bible says that there are two kingdoms, the Kingdom of Darkness, which is ruled by Satan, and the Kingdom of Light. The book of Jude says that the place of darkness was actually prepared for angels that disobeyed God, not for people, ever.

"And it was the scariest and the most frightening and the most terrifying place I have ever been in. I would never wish or hope that even my worst enemy went to hell.
