    Too little, too late?

Seems to be having a change of heart for all those anti-gay votes he cast, but only after announcing that he won't be running again. He's going to study Marine Biology in Hawaii. How gay is that! icon_smile.gif

Says a lot about the pressures to stay closeted and toe the conservative line when you are a Republican politician...

I don't think it's ever too late. I think we forget that everyone has their own unique experience with coming out. For some it is easier than for others, and everyone has to do it according to their own comfort zone. I can only imagine the pain and guilt this man has internalized for far too long as he grappled with this within himself. Good for him for finally taking this empowering step forward in truth. No, it's never too late. It already looks add though he is using this new found freedom in a positive way to invoke change, compassion, and tolerance.

    Nope.

I hope the guilt and a bad conscience can spur him on to make amends for all the harm he has done.

I'd be more forgiving if he was going to stick around and try to compete for his seat, and as a result actually go on record with his future votes. As JP and Christian infer, this is way too easy for him to make these statements as he is heading out the door...

Hey CJ, how much you want to bet that there have been and are remaining, more gay Repubs in congress than there are Libs ? You see libs are open progressive and inclusive minded people, so they don't have to hide, but repubs are scared to death of their Christian Fundi backers so they go overboard to prove that they're something other than who they are, to stay 'in' with their base. Just another way that you repubs should open your eyes and see beyond the status quo. pull those heads out of the sand, all is not as it appears !! by the way, that goes for the subject you love to hate. LOL

don't take offence either damit, repub or not and often disagreeing with you or not, I still think your 'OK', so just think about it and have a great day.

You do realize that Obama running on an "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman" platform but secretly believing that gay marriage should be legalized is no different than a gay man who runs for a political position without being open about his sexuality?

This has nothing to do with Obama...and everything to do with a gay republican who threw the gay community under the bus for his own self interests.

Who knows if you're right or wrong. Maybe the whole Republican Party is a walking closet case for all I know. Maybe all liberal Democrat women are lesbians -- heck if I know icon_rolleyes.gif However, speaking of "opening eyes" and "seeing beyond the status quo", I think that kind of thing can go both ways. Here we have a state representative in the GOP who has made the very difficult decision to come out, and the supposedly "open-minded" liberal thinkers here are quick to crucify the guy, not seeing anything at all positive here, when I think there is much positive to see. Same sort of thing goes for Mitt Romney’s Foreign Policy and National Security Spokesman, Richard Grenell, who recently resigned yesterday after some social conservatives criticized the campaign's appointment of the openly gay Republican. I have read online, as well as heard on the radio even today, different gay spokespeople chastising Grenell for ever taking the job in the first place. "How dare he accept a position with the campaign of a man who wants to make us 2nd class citizens" is what I was hearing a lot. That sort of mindset makes no sense to me. Why should our sexual orientation "not matter" only when it's convenient? I don't see a whole of difference between someone saying "you shouldn't have taken that job because you're gay" and someone saying "you can't have this job because you're gay". Richard Grenell was hired for his qualifications -- end of story -- yet many other gays would begrudge him taking the job in the first place because his "gayness" is in stark contrast with a campaign that some feel is "anti-gay". I just think we have a whole lot of work to do ON BOTH SIDES of the political spectrum when it comes to the "open your eyes" and the "pull your head out of the sand" game.

Really? Are you making stuff up --- AGAIN??? Please cite a single member here at RJ who, as you put it, support any Republican candidates for "the money and social advantage they think it gives them". Name just one, Art?

You're criticizing someone for not being "honest" and "open" about who they are. Using that standard, you would have to use the same nasty language about ANY politician or person who isn't being totally honest about what they believe in their heart but are running on a platform to appease their constituency.

Im criticizing him for throwing the gay community under the bus in an obvious attempt to hide from his own sexual orientation.

He doesnt deserve a free pass just because he was "confused" or going thru the discovery process.
