I found out about this ban a few months back on RJ. I didn't know about it. I was telling people about it and they asked me, "Well, how are U.S. customs going to know if a person has HIV?"

And I thought it was a good question. But I wasn't able to answer it.

Can anyone tell me how U.S. customs would know anything about a foreigner's medical history and prevent them entry?

When someone applies for a Visa, a medical check is often required. The only time when such checks aren't required are when traveling to or from countries with whom we have excellent relations and/or possess an advanced medical system, like the UK, Canada, etc.

I guess if they found their medication in their luggage it would be a dead giveaway, that is if they recognised them.

About time though, a senseless policy.

I felt like bitch slapping the immigration officer last time I traveled to the US when he out right told me on my $29,000 part time salary and college expenses I couldn't afford to stay at my hotel....

Oh so then these have to do with work visas that foreigners obtain in order for these individuals to live in the United States?

So then if people are simply coming for a vacation using only a passport then it's not an issue?

Thanks for the explanation but not too clear as to whether foreigners need a passport in addition to having a visa to simply vacation in the states.

just a vacation, a visa waiver will do
however all the above mentioned info is still required

I don't believe there is an "active" screening of someone's medical records going on...it's more about if there is an emergency and you need to access medical care and you are found out, you are immediately deported and banned from EVER entering the country again...
