Wilde Roast is a cool gay coffee shop and has outdoor seating. As far as bars go, Eagle/Bolt is fun from 5:30 to around 10 on Fridays, and has a popular beer bust on Sundays after 4:00. Lush is sometimes good on Fridays and Sundays, but tends to be a bit more lesbian sometimes. Depends on if they're having an event, I guess.

Twinks go to the Saloon usually, which has a dance floor. I haven't been there for years, but Jetset also used to attract some twinks. Best chance for jocks would be Bolt.

Is Bolt on like the gay strip? Is there a gay strip like Chicago's?

Nothing like Chicago's gay strip here, but Hennepin has about 3 gay bars on it, including the Saloon. Not the safest street to walk alone at night, BTW. Bolt is by itself on Washington.

The Mpls Eagle, Bolt and the Bolt Underground (all combined on Washington Ave) sometime enforce a leather/jeans dress code on weekends. Check ahead online or by phone. The enclosed outdoor patio at the Eagle can get quite raunchy if there's a good crowd. I've seen guys having sex out there, and even getting fucked on the pool table inside. Downstairs at the Bolt Underground I've seen bondage demos, hot waxings, floggings, and all kinds of BDSM stuff.

Hennepin Ave has several gay bars, the Saloon being the largest and offering dancing. The Brass Rail on Hennepin has drag nights, as well as the Gay Nineties a block down, but it's straight-owned and a bit touristy. Over in St. Paul the Townhouse is a smaller neighborhood kind of bar, but is a mecca for drag queens, and often has good shows.

Already mentioned above, Wilde Roast is a cozy place for lunch, with an attempt at a residential feel. A bit pricey for what you get, though.

So how safe are the areas?

I never felt threatened on Hennepin Ave, usually busy even at night, with a good police presence because of the theatre crowds. It's about the largest street in the entire city, where they hold the annual Pride Parade (which I've led).

Washington Ave where the Mpls Eagle/Bolt is can be a bit dicey, I always went there by car or motorcycle and parked nearby (which can be a challenge, but true for the entire Mpls downtown, unless you pay for an indoor garage).

I wish that I could join you in Minneapolis. I have heard a lot of great things about that city.

Bolt does not have a dress code on Fridays and Sundays, but some Saturdays there are "events": underwear, western, uniform, leather. They usually post it on their website. There is a large parking lot adjacent to Bolt that normally charges $1.50 for the evening, unless there's a game going on. I have never heard of anyone being hassled in that area.

Hennepin, on the other hand, attracts some seedy characters, especially around the Block E development, and I have heard of individuals being beaten and robbed. The area around Saloon is generally safe due to the popularity of the theaters and upscale restaurants. It's just the walk between Saloon and the Ninety's/Brass Rail, that can get dicey at night, but you will not find twinks at either of those places anyway.

Downtown Minneapolis is completely safe! You don't need to worry. downtown is only about a mile square so you can cab or walk to all the bars.
Go to Jet Set on Fri night unless you want to start early with 3 for 1's at the Eagle Happy Hour. Go to the Saloon on Sat night.
