I'm riding to the gym the other day in a fantastic mood....windows down, beautiful spring day with the music blaring. I'm about to pull into the parking lot and this song comes on. I've heard the song a million times, but this is the first time I actually listened to the lyrics. My eyes filled up with tears so quickly I could barely see to park. I'm not a huge crier so this really shocked me how hard and suddenly this song took me down. The first line made me think of all the missed opportunities I've had to tell someone how beautiful or important they are to me, and before I could recover from that, the fourth line makes me think of my Mom who recently died. I just can't express how badly this song got to me. I sat there sobbing for like ten minutes.

Are there any songs that have done this to you? And what was it about the song that affected you so strongly?

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize - we're floating in space -
Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry
Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize - Oh - Oh - Oh
Do You Realize - that everyone you know
    Someday will die -

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face
    Do You Realize

There's a line in the second verse that says - "You have suffered enough and warred with yourself - It's time that you won..."

That makes me tear up just about every time I hear the song.

There are others, but that's the big one for me at the moment.

"Trapeze Swinger" by Iron and Wine.

It came on during one of the most intimate encounters I've ever had. I hope he remembers me like in the song. The lines about the graffiti at the Pearly Gates... Thinking about how I loved someone so much, and maybe we'll meet again in the afterlife. Wow.

    Please remember me, happily
    By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin, the time when
We counted every black car passing

Your house beneath the hill and up until
Someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention

    But please remember me, fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say that the Pearly Gates
    Had some eloquent graffiti

Like 'We'll meet again' and 'Fuck the man'
And 'Tell my mother not to worry'
And angels with their great handshakes
But always done in such a hurry

And please remember me, at Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white, by midnight
    We'd forgotten one another

And when the morning came I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
And now you're lit up by the city

    So please remember me, mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower
Call, then pass us by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour

Gleam and resonate just like the gates
    Around the Holy Kingdom
With words like, 'Lost and found' and 'Don't look down'
    And 'Someone save temptation'

And please remember me as in the dream
We had as rug burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Beside the lions and the ladies

That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
    Swinger high as any savior

But please remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above there running

In circles round the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter
So bright on cinder gray in spray paint
'Who the hell can see forever?'

    And please remember me, seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turn from me
And said the trapeze act was wonderful

But never meant to last, the clowns that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
    Had an element of danger

    So please remember me, finally
    And all my uphill clawing
My dear, but if I make the Pearly Gates
I'll do my best to make a drawing

Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissin' on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around the frightened trapeze swinger

    Nah nah nah
    Nah nah nah
    Nah nah nah

Anything written by Jennifer Nettles/Sugarland. The places she goes and reaches through her voice and song are incredible.

Every line of Grizzly Bear's "While You Wait For The Others" cuts me to the core. They also happen to be gay, which makes me proud. Every time I hear it, I have flashbacks of fights I had with my first boyfriend.

While you wait for the others
    to make it all worthwhile
    all your useless pretentions
    are weighing on my time
    you could beg for forgiveness
    as long as you like
or just wait out the evening
    and always ask me why
yes you'll only bleed me dry
so ill ask you kindly to make your way

    and what was there
    the perfect glare
    we all fall through

while you wait on the answers
    that ill pretend to find
    keeping up with emotions
    still occupies our time
    you could hope for substance
    as long as you like
or just wait out the evening
    and always ask me why
yes youll always ask me why
ill ask you kindly to make your way

    and what was left
    the perfect glare
    we all fall through

    and all we want

    and what was there
    and what was there
    and what wasnt there

This music video has nothing to do with the lyrics of this song, which I think is a shame, because the lyrics are absolutely beautiful.

George Harrison, I'D HAVE YOU ANYTIME. Heartfelt lyrics.

    All I have is yours
    All you see is mine
And I'm glad to hold you in my arms
    I'd have you anytime.

This song was written by David Gates about his dad. For those who have lost someone that they truly loved, it's a very powerful song. It serves as a reminder that we must enjoy the people we care about while we still have them around.

    You sheltered me from harm.
Kept me warm, kept me warm.
You gave my life to me.
Set me free, set me free.
The finest years I ever knew,
Were all the years I had with you.

And I would give anything I own.
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again.

You taught me how to laugh.
What a time, what a time.
    You never said too much,
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you.

    Nobody else could ever know,
The part of me that can't let go.

And I would give anything I own,
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again.

    Is there someone you know,
    Your loving them so,
But taking them all for granted?
You may lose them one day.
    Someone takes them away,
And they don't hear the words you long to say.

I would give anything I own,
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own,
    Just to have you back again;
Just to touch you once again.

I heard this song shortly after I met the guy of my dreams. Amazing man and truly a light for me...but there is obviously something stopping him from being with me (he is single btw, not over his ex)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ce6IdWCBPY&ob=av2n

    Watching You Watch Him

    I love you
From the bottom of my heart
    And that's not gonna' change
    But things look grim
When I am watching you watch him

I give you the best a man can hope to give
    But I'm not feeling brave
    Chances are slim
When I am watching you watch him

Oh, what is left to learn
When he would let you crash and burn
    He never gives attention
    But you still yearn
    Where do I fit in
When I am watching you watch him

God only knows why I still wait around
Except I hate to see you cry
    And I need you
But there are things I cannot do

    [ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/watching-you-watch-him-lyrics-eric-hutchinson.html ]
    And I want you
When he's playing all his games
And it gets hard to tell whose the victim
When I am watching you watch him

Oh, what is left to learn
When he would let you crash and burn
    He never gives attention
    But you still yearn
    Where do I fit in
When I am watching you watch him

God only knows why I still wait around
Except I hate to see you cry
    And I need you
But there are things I cannot do

    And I love you
    Like a broken record plays
    But I'm a window pane
    A phantom limb
When I am watching you watch him
When I am watching you watch him
When I am watching you watch him

The first time I heard this song last year I had to find out who sang it and downloaded it.. These lyrics really make me feel in awe... and reminds me how I felt when I was a kid .. just taking the world in for what it naturally is and what it has to offer.

There is a house built out of stone
Wooden floors, walls and window sills
Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust
This is a place where I don't feel alone
This is a place where I feel at home

    And I built a home
    For you
    For me

    Until it disappeared
    From me
    From you

And now, it's time to leave and turn to dust
Out in the garden where we planted the seeds
There is a tree as old as me
Branches were sewn by the color of green
Ground had arose and passed it's knees

By the cracks of his skin I climbed to the top
I climbed the tree to see the world
When the gusts came around to blow me down

Held on as tightly as you held onto me
Held on as tightly as you held onto me

    And, I built a home
    For you
    For me

    Until it disappeared
    From me
    From you

And now, it's time to leave and turn to dust...

I almost cried this morning listening to this song. He's a senior and graduating this semester. I do not have courage to tell him much I care about him and have decided to place him forever in my memory. This world is too big for my little hope that I would come across him again someday

    @Scruffypup: Gay.

On a serious note, I'd probably have to go with one of the songs from RENT... probably "Will I?", "Finale B" and my personal favourite "One Song Glory."

And none of the popular music that I've heard these days really have an effect on me like that, there have been some classical songs that do that to me but since those don't have lyrics... not for this thread.

    Scruffs - Great thread!

Some of the lads on here are dashing but now they've shared their music..

    oh my! icon_redface.gif

Perhaps not the most profound song ever but I heard it for the first time in ages a few days ago and I think the message is strong.

Bag lady you gone hurt your back
Dragging all them bags like that
I guess nobody ever told you
All you must hold on to
Is you, is you, is you

Great thread! I've loved that Flaming Lips song since the first time I heard it on an iPod commercial.

These are my favorite lyrics from my favorite band:

The hallowed lands so far behind
    As fleeting dreams still linger
Like distant voices through the rain
Like grains of sand cast from my hands

I never thought I'd go this far
Without a star to cross the seas
So far from shores I'd left behind
Still far from shores I've yet to reach

I try to find the strength I need
To calm the doubts in my beliefs
With the will, I know my heart won't break

And if I have strength then I've belief
If I have love my heart still beats
    Here under stars
    Far from home

The picture fades, the light recedes
The sound is lost in whispers
My recollections once clear and pure
Now distant lights that dim with time

I never thought I'd go this far
Without a star to cross the seas
So far from shores I'd left behind
Still far from shores I've yet to reach

This song really resonated with me back in '08 when my marriage was in its dying days...

EDIT: I know it was about young-person's angst, but there were elements that applied to me, too.

Holy shit, my kind of thread! I feel compelled to post twice....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-BZ0D92mtU GOES HERE

Well, I met you at the blood bank
We were looking at the bags
Wondering if any of the colors
Matched any of the names we knew on the tags

You said, see look that's yours
Stacked on top with your brother's
See how the resemble one another
Even in their plastic little covers

And I said I know it well
That secret that you knew but don't know how to tell
It fucks with your honor and it teases your head
But you know that it's good girl
'Cause its running you with red

    Then the snow started falling
We were stuck out in your car
You were rubbing both of my hands
    Chewing on a candy bar

You said, ain't this just like the present
To be showing up like this?
As a moon waned to crescent
    We started to kiss

And I said I know it well
That secret that we know that we don't know how to tell
I'm in love with your honor, I'm in love with your cheeks
What's that noise up the stairs, babe?
    Is that Christmas morning creaks?

And I know it well, I know it well
And I know it well, I know it
And I know it, I know it
And I know it, I know it
