REPUB PLAN >>> Slash Safety Net to Protect Military Spending.

House Republicans are set to advance legislation this afternoon that would slash billions from safety net programs while protecting military spending from cuts.

The proposal includes $35.8 billion in cuts to food stamps, and $17 billion in cuts to Social Services Block Grant to states, which supports programs such as Meals on Wheels.

Reuters reports that defense spending under the GOP plan would "be $8 billion higher than levels agreed last August, rising to $554 billion in 2013."

House Democrats slammed the proposal, writing in a report on Thursday: "The House Republican budget for fiscal year 2013 reflects the Majority’s unbalanced approach to deficit reduction: they provide costly additional tax breaks for millionaires while finding savings by ending the Medicare guarantee for seniors, slashing investments that strengthen our economy, and shredding the social safety net."

Robert Greenstein and Richard Kogan write for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities that the Republican plan "relies disproportionately on cutting assistance for low- and moderate-income families, children, and elderly and disabled people."

The Hill: House lawmakers return to deficit battle

Republican leaders are planning to bring up a $260 billion measure to slash the budget gap and replace across-the-board spending cuts set to take effect in 2013.

The bill, known as a “reconciliation” proposal, is the product of six House committees and will be combined into one piece of legislation by the House Budget Committee. Democrats have already panned it as an extension of the House GOP proposal that “reflects the wrong priorities” by protecting tax cuts for the wealthy and cutting programs for the poor.

Reuters: House Republicans target social cuts to shield military

The cuts to food stamps, child tax credits and Medicaid healthcare for the poor, among others, are certain to stall in the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate. But they stake out Republicans' negotiating stance on replacing $1.2 trillion in automatic, across-the-board spending cuts that are due to take effect in January. [...]

The automatic spending cuts, of which $600 billion would come from defense through 2022 - were part of last summer's eleventh-hour deal to avert an historic debt default and raise the federal borrowing cap. Congress agreed to $900 billion in immediate cuts, but a bipartisan "supercommittee" failed in its task to find $1.5 trillion in additional cuts over a decade. [...]

In addition to the food stamp savings, the six committees have proposed to eliminate social services grants to states and kill tax credits associated with Obama's healthcare overhaul law. Child tax credit refunds would be denied to those who cannot produce a valid Social Security number - a move targeting immigrants without U.S. work permits. And government employees would have to contribute more to their pensions.

The Ryan bill also takes aim at financial reforms, eliminating the government's powers to shut down large financial institutions, as well as cutting funding for the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A tort reform plan to end frivolous lawsuits included in the measure would lead to lower health care costs, according the CBO.

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities: House Budget Bills Would Target Programs for Lower-Income Families While Breaking Last Summer's Bipartisan Deal

Keep cutting off the funds to the very poor, and lets watch how much tighter it strangles the economy. Maintaining the Military 'sacred funds' will only enrich a few and if you haven't noticed, our adventurism just makes us more enemies, and keeps the cycle going of "keep us safe" from our enemies that we make for ourselves and little of it does any godam good for we US citizens, Do you feel any safer over the Iraq adventure ??? WE ARE THE WORSE OFF !!! So I say CUT HELL OUT OF THE PENTAGON BUDGET !!!!

To those in the military, of course you feel territorial, but take a good hard look at reality, then maybe you'll agree too, such Military adventurism as Iraq, should not be repeated and one good way to stop it is by cutting the Pentagon and all their waste. If they don't have so much money to spend, they'll problably cut back on making enemies. LOL Break the Military Complex Cycle, CUT THEM BY 1/3RD

The way it is supposed to work, the democrats are now supposed to come back with an equally stupid budget proposal slashing corporate gifts, loopholes for all those big spenders and, oh yeah, the tax credits and tax cuts for the rich.
    Then they compromise.
Remember compromise? That is how it is supposed to work. The republicans have it right. They know they throw out this absurd concept. It's the democrats that have become pussies who can't seem to put any sort of budget together at all.
They have no leadership. The senate is a shambles and the congressional democrats are a bunch of inbred losers. Pelosi is a drunken whore. Shame on all of them, both parties are disgusting.

    Follow the campaign contributions.

Military contractors get an excellent return on their investment. Republicans will vote billions for weapons that even military brass says are a waste of money.

Liberals love to scream bloody murder about defense spending --- that is, of course, until GOD FORBID the day comes when we actually need to be defended with a strong Defense.

Right... because spending 25 times more on the military than the next highest spending nation helped so much on 9/11. icon_rolleyes.gif

So the rest of the industrialized world does fine alltogether spending less than the US does in its Interventionist military adventures like that godam Iran war but that doesn't even cause you to have second thoughts ?

The debt from these last 10 years has heaped ruin on out economy, but still no second thoughts eh ? Even the CIA has said our terrorism problem is blowback, deosn't that cause you to have second thoughts

We have enough munitions now to destroy the world many times over, we don't need to continue spending more than the rest of the world combined to stay safe, so don't even tell us we need more. We'd be safer if we'd stay the hell out of most country's business instead of orchestrating coups as with Iran that we have paid for over and over again since our interference began back in the 1950's.

CJ, more and more I'm coming to the conclusion that your just tickled to death with the status quo system and you just don't want to be bothered with having to think about hard facts that cut holes in that system your so enamored with. Your comfortable so you don't want to be bothered or confused by facts, those facts get in the way of your comfort level, so you just want to dismiss them and don't want to be informed.

From a commentor on a Similar subject at Huffington Post:

Moshe: "Endless war is the endless problem"

"No amount of fiscal austerity can keep up with open ended military expenditures on pointless wars."

These wars were brought to us by the Resource control freak Neo Cons of the Bush era and those remaining in places of powers are still using their propaganda to forward even more war, their current war of choice being Iran. Whose sons are these fuckers sending off to fight their godam wars ? NOT THEIRS !!!!

These sources behind overspending need to be cut off and cut out of the equation and then cut this wasteful spending rather than cut programs that help us here at home.

Not true. Not at all happy about the state of all kinds of things, and I would definitely like to see them change. However YOUR interpretation as to what constitutes a "hard fact" is what I have a problem with. I like the Ronald Reagan "Peace Through Strength" mentality. But we live in a different world now...it's a scary place in which his other mantra "Trust But Verify" becomes more and more problematic. I don't necessarily disagree with ALL of your obsessive rants, but I do think much of it is wasted energy because it simply isn't realistic in today's world.
