A ground-breaking statement made by the President, and you didn't even look to see if there were other threads posted about it already? icon_lol.gif

Mind us, he only said this when he's kind of a shoo-in for the next election. He's rallying his base after Romney alienated his.

    he's def not a "shoo-in"
his support of gay marriage will upset a huge block of his black voting constituent.... those black votes count big time for Obama, especially in "swing" states like NC, Ohio, PA, FLA, etc..

Black people will vote against gay marriage, but they will not vote against Obama. He will still get 96% of the black vote, and they will still all come out and vote.

Here are my feelings on it as a libertarian/fiscal conservative/social tolerance advocate:

I commend Obama hugely for this move. Whether genuine or not or aimed at stirring up his base, that's politics and I still am glad he came out with this.

The thing I have to wrestle with is the whole picture. Will Obama be deciding the issue of gay marriage, even if personally he is in favor of it? No. It still comes down to definitions and defining marriage. Voting for Obama does not necessarily mean voting to have gay marriage a REALITY in this country.

Truthfully, this should not be a federal government issue. Marriage is a union/contract between two individuals.

Ultimately the supreme court will decide it and that's really all there is to it.

So do I want to vote for Obama because of his support for gay marriage? Yes, a huge part of me wants to, the other part isn't so certain because there is a lot at stake.

If Obama wins it will send a clear message to all republicans hereafter that running on an anti-gay marriage stance is a LOSING position, and if Romney wins it may send the opposite message.

Have I made up my mind yet for certain? No...I need time to really think about this as I never thought this scenario would happen.

If you're gonna take flak from the fundies for a position with merit, you might as well own it rather than cower from it.

Exactly. African Americans are not going to vote against Obama over gay marriage.

It's the equivalent of JFK refuting the idea that the Catholic Church would control him. That didn't keep Catholics home.

Oh believe me there are plenty of very religious ones in the deep south who will.

Shame he will not sign a bill to protect GLB in the work place. very little has been done to tackle discrimination by Obama...... This is simply to buy votes on election coming up.

DADT was pretty big. Title 7 and banning employment discrimination in the workplace will follow.

Well first of all I know who my father was, and he was married to my mother before I was even conceived; thus we can rule out the bastard bit.

As for being cynical it's come from years at RJ, and having to deal with the pack of liberal wolves here. I'm just learning to play the game their way, thats all. Out here in the real world you find something much diffrent and thats where it really mattersicon_wink.gif

But none the less what one said is still the truth, and a truth you must not of liked.

But then I don't see myself as a victom just because I was born a Bona Fide Homosexual either, and are able to see both sides of the fence.

Now who was it that was to sign DADT into action, law?

Considering that gays / gay supporters were already going to vote for Obama (assuming the issue is important for them), his announcement is more likely to lose votes than win more.

Very interesting. Considering blacks voted almost 95% for Obama in 2008 but also overwhelmingly voted against Prop 8 in cali and in the recent North Carolina gay marriage vote

I would like to hear from these voters

Although I assume taxes, economy, jobs, gas prices, war on terror, education and crime rate may all take precedence over the gay marriage issue when people actually vote

I myself am a conservative and want lower taxes, lower gas prices, less government spending, control on illegal immigration and an improved ecocomy so I will be voting for Romney

The graver concern is how the Repubs would use that technology.
