I have a 24" iMac from about 5 years ago that I now want to use as a secondary monitor for my new 27" iMac.
I have tried googling this AND looking on the Apple website but I can't find anything that's not talking about non-Mac monitors. Usually they are using a mac mini.

First I was given a DVI adapter cable by some useless sales people that didn't ask me any questions about anything and I have no idea what the fuck I'm doing so I didn't know what I was looking for.
My dad went and returned the DVI cable without me and brought home a firewire cable which was probably given to him by another useless salesperson because neither of them knew what I'm looking for. Can a firewire cable even be used to connect dual monitors? icon_neutral.gif

Here's the back of my older 24" iMac:

You can click the pics to enlarge.
I was using the yellow ethernet cable to transfer files from the old computer to the new one.

Is it possible to connect these as dual monitors? If so, does anybody know how?
    Thanks.

You need to buy a MiniDisplay port adapter. And plug it in the Thunderbolt port. Just make sure you get the right one that hooks into your monitor. If it's a fairly new monitor, then it should have a DVI port. So yeah.. ask the Mapple Genius to fetch you a MiniDisplay port -> DVI adapter.

    EDIT:
Oh wait.. I re-read your post.. You want to use your old imac as a second monitor? I'm not sure that's possible.

When sending the firewire cable, someone was probably thinking about starting up the old computer in "target mode" which lets you use it as an external hard drive. But as near as I recall, when it's in that mode, all you see on the screen is the firewire symbol.

You may need to use a third-party software solution like AirDisplay. There's supposed to be a version that links two macs.

I've only used it to link my iPhone to my laptop. Does just what you're talking about, except I can leave the laptop at the nav station of my boat, take the phone up on deck and still see and control the instruments.

This is your best solution. I use it for my iPad and my iMac and it works fine... it'll work with two Macs.
