For a sitcom, they were on top of social and political topics. If I'm not mistaken, the show's pilot had a gay domestic. Dorothy had a lesbian friend. Sophia's son was a cross-dresser. Rose had an AIDS scare following an operation. I'm sure you guys will think of a bunch of other situations, too.

I love the reruns. I've debated buying the whole series on DVD, but why should when I can watch it for free.

I used to work at the Disney MGM studios where the exterior shell of their house was shot for the show. The costume department there kept and displayed some of their outfits for the tour. Ahhh...memories.

One of the best sit-coms ever. Wasn't Blanche's brother gay? I like watching the reruns on TVLand.

Fantastic dialogue, fast, clever, profound, thought provoking, and very funny.

    Four memorable characters.

    A great show!

I believe what is in syndication right now is edited; they're not full episodes.

    To Caslon19000:

"Oslowma?" You are too old to be this juvenile, Caslon. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

Other than that, thanks for the video post. It was delightful to watch.

Amazing that after 20 years we are still debating this issue. When will people get what Sophie was saying, it's not that hard to understand.

It was a great show. I'm the GG fan who has them all on DVD and yes, when you seen the re runs, some episodes are missing frames. The DVDs have the full episodes. They raised many touchy and controversial topics...

    Rose and the AIDS scare
Dorothy with her lesbian friend Pat
Blanche with her gay brother Clayton who wanted to marry his boyfriend Doug
Blanche with her daughter Rebecca who got pregnant via a sperm bank
Blanche with her other daughter Becky who had a verbally abusive boyfriend
Dorothy with her son Michael (young/white) who married Lorane (older/black) and approached the inter racial relationship
Dorothy with her struggle with gambling addiction
Rose with her struggle with pain killing drug addiction

They may be others... Great show and still watch.

I Forgot that Blanche had a verbal abusive relationship too she had to get out of when she witnessed her boyfriend get physical with Dorothy.

Don't forget about Sophia's friend who wanted her assistance in committing suicide. That was a while before we heard about Kevorkian and the euthanasia debate.

WOW! So ahead of its time and of all things a show about 4 old ladies living together.

Like someone above me posted earlier is how sad we are still debating gay marriage 20 years later. If it takes another 20 years after today we will be going backwards even more in this country.

Even with Obama and Biden expressing their views now... It still wasn't great to hear that Obama feels its a state issue. Like someone wrote on another post, perhaps on another forum, basic civil rights and liberties should not be a state decision but a federal one. In time this will come around. Its such a generational view. Just not sure how much time we will have to wait.

Even 20 years ago was 18 years after the American Psychological Association declared us human and 39 years before that Sigmund Freud wrote that "homosexuality...is nothing to be ashamed of, no vice, no degradation, it cannot be classified as an illness."

So this is now 77 years, or nearly 4 generations, after the father of modern psychology said that gay is normal, yet still the str8s deny us our rights.

Good find on that Golden Girls vid. What a great show that was. I stupidly missed the opportunity to enjoy Bea Arthur in person a few years back when she partied with all the gays at Cathode Ray on Las Olas in Lauderdale. I thought it was going to be too crazy for just a few moments but it turned out she partied with everyone through the weee hours and, that, after her show at the performing arts center. What incredible energy she had.

She was a true friend to our community. As was the Golden Girls. How bizzare that for what probably caused the most changes in the str8 populations' attitudes towards us, we would owe our greatest thanx to sitcoms.
