So a black man at my gym suggested there should be a Straight steam room and a Gay steam room at every gym to keep us separated. WTF?

What do I say to this? Call him out on his homophobic views? Remind him of the last time segregation was a reality? Or just leave it.
What would you have said or done?

I would have asked him, "Why, what do you plan on doing in the gay steam room?"

I'm guessing something to do with the separate facilities, like separate water fountains from the old days.

C'mon, you know that it is supposed to be ironic since this was common a few decades ago:

You are so right. If this man were white, this comment would be completely irrelevant.

Yea I get that, but still discrimination is discrimination.

Bigotry has never been exclusively white.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, separate steam rooms in the gym for gays and straights. In today's modern day and age, any ideas like this are totally mind boggling.

Probably worried about catching stuff.... which would not even bother someone who wears flip-flops and sits on a towel in the steam room.

If this story is true, then this guy should have been reminded that not too many decades ago, the same despicable thing was said to blacks by whites.

Do the gay guys at your gym frequently do, ahem..."fun stuff" in the steam room? If so, then I could sort of see why he would suggest something like that. I've walked into some questionable activity in the sauna at the university gym that I would have preferred not to see. Although implementing separate gay and straight steam rooms would be impossible as there would be no reliable way to enforce the rules.

But if he's just homophobic and is afraid that the big bad gheys are gonna see his peepee, then I'd probably call him out on it.

First of all he is just a man, another human being like a latino or an irish man you met in that setting. Once you begin from there the rest of your questions will probably be pretty much easily answered. Just my ignorant opinion on the matter which I know nothing about actually.

Maybe he cares about us and wants us to have a room to meet the gay guys in the gym and have a private room with steam where we can also add to the steam with post-workout sex.

#YCYL clearly needs to be more widely known among the gay community. Otherwise straight dudes probably wouldn't care.

The parks are better. The one with tons of trees and not alot of families travel through. Some heterosexuals use the parks as well.

    As do some police officers.

California is doing away with all steam rooms due to "cruise you lose" unfortunately.

I don't think the comparison to what he said was comparable to racial segregation at all. Are you also opposed to steam rooms and changing rooms that are separated by gender?

    Please elaborate ...

http://steamworksonline.com/berkeley/berkeley.html still seems to be very much in business.

Of course, that is a licensed venue where cruising is not necessarily a criminal offense (private club rules?)

#IANAL so I'm asking out of genuine curiosity for the legislation or legal precedent behind your statement: a casual google search doesn't turn up any recent California legislation that forces gyms to close down saunas and steam rooms, or prevents new gyms from opening a sauna/steam room.

LOL .... ignorance also does not discriminate ... obviously someone has never heard of Nazi Germany's Men of the Pink Triangle

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_triangle
'The pink triangle... was one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, used to identify male prisoners who were sent there because of their homosexuality ... rough estimate of the number of men convicted for homosexuality between 1933 to 1944 at between 50,000 and 63,000 ... After the camps were liberated at the end of the Second World War, many of the pink triangle prisoners were often simply re-imprisoned by the Allied-established Federal Republic of Germany ... An openly gay man named Heinz Dörmer, for instance, served 20 years total, first in a Nazi concentration camp and then in the jails of the new Republic. In fact, the Nazi amendments to Paragraph 175, which turned homosexuality from a minor offense into a felony, remained intact in both East and West Germany after the war for a further 24 years.'

Perhaps you have not heard that Uganda’s government considered passing legislation banning homosexuality with penalty of death for violators.
    http://youandmedoweagree.wordpress.com/2010/01/07/outlawing-homosexuality-ties-to-the-u-s/

Yes there have been many atrocities done to minorities, in this country and around the world, but the war on homosexuality has been a quiet war that has been going on for years and years and many people have been beaten, abuse and killed without even a whisper. That is the reason you think that the crimes against minorities are greater and the crimes against homosexuality do not amount to even a hill of bean.

What does any of that have to do with my post or with this thread?

You're an idiot. Nazi Germany & Uganda have not a damn thing to do with a straight man not wanting to be half naked in front of gay men. His race was brought into this discussion by the OP for exclusively racist reasons.

Women and men typically have separate locker rooms in gyms. Is this also the equivalent of Jim Crow segregation?

I would dispute him, but not based on skin color. Though I realize you may have felt this made a good parallel about general discrimination that might strike a chord with him, given the history of Black discrimination in the US.

Perhaps his presumption is that being gay is a "third sex" that should be separated as straight men & women are in locker room settings. Explain to him that we are not.

But he may be a lost cause anyway. Guys who are afraid that gays want to molest them are often too confused & misinformed on the issue to ever change their beliefs. Or certainly not during a few words in a gym. I wouldn't let it pass, but neither would I expect any attitudes to change.
