Anyone have any recommendations for places to eat, bars, etc near 9th St NW and New York Ave NW? or around the Smithsonian?

That's around the Chinatown/Mt. Vernon area. Shouldn't be too hard to find a place to eat. Try Busboys and Poets on 5th and K. I used to work there awhile back. Their are lots of places by the Verizon Center in Chinatown, but there is also a lot of "urban youth" who like to hang around that part of town at night too. I would recommend Dupont on Georgetown for better and more options...

    When are you coming?

I read an article about Betty White's political endorsement and it mentions she'll be at the Smithsonian and the National Zoo next week. icon_biggrin.gif

Yeh - that's by Chinatown. If you're going to stay in that area, try CocoSala to dine (very trendy). If you're looking for ethnic, unique and don't mind dishing out a few extra bucks - try Marrakesh on NY ave.

A short cab ride away - try Nellies (gay sports bar), #9, JRs, Cobalt...

Depends on what price range you want and cuisine type but:

    - **OYA (9th and H)
    - **Oyamel (7th and D)
    - SEI - (7th and E)
    - **Nandos Peri Peri (cheap and yummy) 7th and H
    - Ping Pong Dim Sum (7th and I (like i))
    - Pho DC (6th and H St) - Vietnamese
    - Proof - 8th and G (wine bar/food)
    - Zaytinya - (9th and G) Turkish/Greek/Lebanese
    - Graffiato (6th and H I believe) - Italian
    - **Asia Nine - 9th and E -- Thai/Pan Asian Yummy!
    - **Rasika (7th and D) ... divine indian food, but $$$

lol... that's my old neighborhood, so I know it well icon_smile.gif

I do not get why oya, oyamel, zaytaniya or those sorts are such a craze in DC. I find them too overrated for the prize one has to pay. I do not find the food to be worth 60$.

My favorites are Rasika, Nando's peri peri, zango, matchbox, and vapianos. Asia 9 on E is pretty descent too.

Good recommendations, but just FYI... Nellie's is fun,but I wouldn't go there for the food (the burgers are ok, but that's not why people go there). JR's is a great bar (I was just there last night!) but does not serve any food at all. The restaurant on the ground floor of Cobalt, on the other hand (called Level One) has very good food!

If you're in a hurry, Cap City Brewing Company is generally fast and reasonably priced. Wide range of food and beer choices.

Haven't been in a couple of years, but Acadiana is also a personal favorite.

Oh no - all of these are just bar recommendations. The Nellie's menu isn't exactly wonderful LOL

But I guess the food there does wonders for televised game watching icon_smile.gif

    Thanks for the replies.

We are really party people, just a low key vacation to see the sights. Dinners will be mostly casual.

Last time I was in D.C. I went to the FOUNDING FARMERS Restaurant. It was first rate.

    http://www.wearefoundingfarmers.com/

I had a salad that used the "Popcorn of the Day" as a substitute for croutons and it was amazing. Also some of the best corn bread I have ever had anywhere. Highly recommended. They make EVERYTHING fresh in house there and don't miss the homemade ice cream for dessert.
