The first bodybuilder I ever saw as a kid was Dickerson on the tv game show "What's My Line?" A dozen or so years later I moved to Manhattan and my first time aimlessly walking Central Park I gravitated towards this woodsy, bucolic peninsula near the boathouse where I noticed some strange behavior in evidence - obviously gay men walking or just standing singly in the rambles. The paths through the underbrush narrowed and got increasingly sinister and I stumbled upon two men at the water's edge innocuously talking, one of whom was practically bursting out of his form fitting long sleeve turtleneck, who I recognized as Chris Dickerson, which absolutely blew my mind - back then, I was "straight" and gay + bodybuilder did not compute. Later I found out that this was the notorious gay cruising spot, "The Rambles." If only I'd run into him a couple years later, but it took another fifteen or 20 when I was no longer single before I saw him near Astor Place in street clothes looking more adorable than intimidating. I just googled him and found out he now lives in Wilton Manors, so that removes all doubt - he's gay. Who knows? Maybe he's a canasta buddy with RJ's own Art Deco.
