Got one for by bday when I was a kid. My mom knew immediately what it was for and burned it in the original unopened box. Probably for the best since I do believe in spiritual forces and that they can influence the living. Besides, don't wanna end up like the little girl in the exorcist lol.

Here's how they work, this from straightdope.com. No demons, gods or angels involved:

What makes the pointer move? An effect similar to that which occurs in dowsing, known as the ideomotor effect. This is a fancy name for involuntary/unconscious movement, such as a dowser's hand flicking enough to move his stick when he passes over an area he knows has water. (In fact, Cecil has discussed this very subject.) The basic point is that your muscles can move without your consciously thinking, "move to the word YES." As the Skeptic''s Dictionary says, "suggestions can be made to the mind by others or by observations. Those suggestions can influence the mind and affect motor behavior. What is purely physiological, however, appears to some to be paranormal." In other words, if you believe this stuff and are trying to get the spirits to answer questions proving that they are all-knowing, and you ask a question that you already know the answer to (for example, "What's my father's name?"), odds are that your own hands will do the rest by spelling out your answer. That's where trying it blindfolded comes in (provided you haven't memorized the board, obviously). If it's spirits, they should be able to guide your hands no matter whether you can see or not. But if it's you doing it unconsciously, the blindfold will screw things up.

Some friends and I played around with one when I was about 13 and I SWORE it was real then...but as I grow older and realize how dumb I used to be, I completely side with LittleDude on this one. I doubt any of us were consciously moving it, but I believe we were moving it nonetheless

I have two ouija boards that I've purchased off ebay. They're from the 1960's when they were manufactured by Parker Brothers in Salem MA. icon_cool.gificon_razz.gif

I have a friend who used one in college and had a pretty frightening experience with it. I don't remember all the specifics, but I know that it spelled something out that turned out to happen to the person it mentioned....like a death of a friend he had. He was terrified when it happened. There are definitely demonic spirits that use those and other devices to reach humans. I wouldn't mess with one. you don't want to invite anything into you or your place by using one.

The bold emphasizes what I think is at work; synaesthesia. My two cents.

The Ouija Board is not something to toy around with. By using this board..it allows you to become a channel for spirits that resonate with a low vibration or are earth-bound ( those spirits that haven't crossed from our dimension to that of the spirit world ). As such...be very careful and the messages they convey to you when using this board.

But if you insists otherwise....say a prayer and burn white candles for only the highest of intentions.

I believe there are things in the world we can't observe or control. I believe some things are a crock of shit. But even with those things, I don't be messing with them, just in case...

definitely real. I messed with one last year on purpose (was writing a speech on whether or not the paranormal exist) and got burned. There was a lot of supernatural things that happened when and after we used it (things that dont even involve the subliminal mind with the pointer...etc). Hell, I'm still getting the heeby jeebies from it. Stay away.

    I'm more of a realist.
So, I'm positive that it doesn't move unless somebody who's using it, moves it.

But, I do believe in karma...

Quiet, I want to sell them an app that makes ouija demons and spirits disappear for a yearly fee.
