Jay-Z Comes Out in Support of Gay Marriage

This is beautiful. Responding to President Obama's endorsement of gay marriage, commander-in-chief of hip-hop Jay-Z has weighed in with his own support of equality. In the video below, you can see Jay say:

It's no different than discriminating against blacks. It's discrimination plain and simple...I think [announcing support of gay marriage is] the right thing to do, so whether it costs [Obama] votes or not — again, it's not about votes. It's about people. It's the right thing to do as a human being.

Here's a real evolution. As opposed to Obama's years of public tiptoeing around the idea that gay people are deserving of marriage equality, Jigga comes from a world where "faggot" is still said as if it's any other word. Jay's no stranger to it, either. In 1999's "Nigga What, Nigga Who (Originator 99)," he says, "Faggots wanna talk to Po-Po's, smoke em like cocoa." Meanwhile, in a response to Nas' implication that Jay himself is gay, Jay shot back in "Takeover" with, "You's the fag model for Karl Kani Esco ads." He's referenced Buju Banton's murder music and has repeatedly used the "no homo" stand-in "pause."

All of this is to say that here we have someone who's repeatedly on the record saying ignorant or unkind things regarding gays, who now has come out in support of their civil rights in the plainest language possible. Granted, it'd probably be exhausting to be so hateful all the time given his wife Beyoncé's own entourage of gays. And he's basically married to a drag queen in the first place (I mean that as a supreme compliment), so he was probably due for an evolution if he hasn't just felt this way all along.

None of that makes Jay's move less bold. It's a lot like Fat Joe's recent words in support of the gay community. Expect to see a lot more like this. Jay's wielding his influence like a public service.

It's great that a rapper as influential as Jay is coming out in support of gay marriage.

He's obviously come a long way from his beginnings as a street hustler turned rapper using misogynistic/homophobic lyrics.

I don't really blame him for that because he was a product of his environment and he's chosen to educate/better himself with the opportunities that wealth has provided.

Beyonce's own entourage of gays lol. I like this a lot, just hope it's not like something they're jumping up on just to get media attention for themselves.

LOL! That's basically my thought, too, that Beyoncé and her strong gay following probably had something to do with Jay-Z's change of heart.

Good for him for being an advocate, but that doesnt make him awesome

Pfft Jay-Z doesnt even write his own music, I wouldnt be surprised if someone wrote this and he bought it from them and claimed it as his own like he usually does with his "raps"

Does he have a new album or something coming out because this is PR genius to get focus on him?

When you say "write music", are you talking the lyrics or the beat he's rapping over?

If you mean the beat than you must LOVE Kanye West because he does both...

Kanye West is retarded. He may know how to write and or produce music (what he was doing before he did his own thing) but his ego knocks him down so much its lulzy

Jay-Z doesnt write his own raps. He has admitted it, other people write the songs, if he likes it, he buys it and claims it as his own and people (who dont know better) treat him like a lyrical genius. icon_rolleyes.gif

    Jay-Z - advocate +1

Jay-Z - awesome? Yeah not so much

Are you dumb? Jay-z's black album was one the best records of the 21st century and he writes all his raps although all mainstream musicians use writers mostly for hooks.

Also I hope Drake can come out now and be my boyfriend.

I'm not trying to be hostile, but I was under the impression that Jay-Z makes his own lyrics.. He doesn't write them down though.

He usually raps in a structured free style and then picks and chooses what works the best for a song.

Jay-Z comes up with all his raps and also is involved in the production element. But some people can't appreciate him because he is too mainstream.

You're the one that is dumb. Jay-Z hasnt written his own shit since "Can I Live," a track on his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt. He might add a sentence here or there but he isnt writing all his shit.

No he throws in a verse here or there, basically someone writes some stuff down, he reads it, adds or takes away to it until they have a finished product. He basically has a or many ghostwriters. But, like in all ghostwriter cases, Jay-Z gets the credit.

He doesn't write everything word by word but doesn't mean the verses are someone's elses. He jots down the main points and freestyles off it.

To claim that all his songs are by ghost writes is fucking idiotic since Jay-z also writes music for other artists too.

Oh and Jay-Z isnt the only one who does this, Dr. Dre did it, Madonna did it, Britney Spears did (probably still does) it, damn near everyone in top 40 did it or still does it.

Oh so now you are admitting he doesn't write everything he does? Good argument. Way to agree with me

OMFG When Jay-Z said he does not write his lyrics, he did not mean all his songs are not his. He just does not write them down on paper and claims to freestyle/memorize. (I have doubts and think he probably writes down the main verses)

Totally different from Britney Spears and Dr.Dre who use ghostwrites for all their songs.

If anyone watched his interview in 60 minutes, he explains how he does not write his lyrics but instead memorizes/freestyles. Some rappers master this technique liek Jay-z/Hov while other suck like Lil Wayne

You really need to watch that doc. You'll see what I am talking about. Then you might realize just how great he really isn't. Once upon a time he did write his shit (all of it), now he has the money to pay someone else to do it, while adding his two cent(ences) to it.

yeah, well the question still remains...Does Jay-Z shower post workout or not???? And what sport do you think he would be good at if he were able to take the guy above him and give him a funny new screen name????

I think you are misunderstanding. When he says he does not write, he means literally with a pen or paper. I know for sure that most if not all of the Black Album is his work. If he did have some other rapper write it for him then it was not disclosed which is very unlikely.

Haha you put it better then I ever can. He also claims to freestyle with the major themes thought out before.

Its not disclosed because he BUYS the rights for the lyrics. Meaning they give up ALL credibility to the lyrics. Even if Jay-Z worked with them on it, if they sell him the rights then he gets ALL the rights to the lyrics. Yeeeesh shouldnt you be stalking Edward or something?

Yea that sounds like some conspiracy level shit. You came here not knowing what the fuck you are talking about and now you are changing your story. You have no proof that this ever happened so next time try harder before pulling shit out of your ass.

Also when you sell your song to someoneelse, you still get credit. For example Skylar Grey selling Love the way you lie to Rihanna.
